London from a point of view of a Harry Potter fan
The famous Harry Potter movies are filmed all around the United Kingdom. Personally I am a real Harry Potter fan and that is why I needed to see certain film locations in London when I went there last December. I did not visit all locations, but in this article I want to share some locations which are, for me, really worth the visit. If you have time enough in the big city, you can visit them all!
1. King’s Cross Station
This is one of the places I visited during my time in London last year. From the city centre, you can easily walk to the station, although it takes about 30/45 minutes. I do not mind to walk for a bit as you come across a lot on the way too, but if you want to get there faster, you can go by metro. King’s Cross station is the station where the Hogwarts students board the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9 ¾. At the station, you can find a place with half a luggage cart disappearing into the wall. You can go on the photo with it and pretend like you are a Hogwarts student yourself. Next to this place, you can find a little shop where you can find lots of merchandise from the movies. Nice to walk around!
2. Diagon Alley
The exterior of Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron are filmed at the Leadenhall Market. The market shows up in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is London’s most beautiful Victorian market. You can find the market very close to the London Bridge and when you go by metro, you need to go to Bank Station.
3. Claremont Square
You could see these row of houses in the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. They appear as the exterior of Grimmauld Place in the movie. You can find the square close to the Underground station Angel Station.
4. Millennium Bridge
You could see this bridge in the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. At the beginning of the film, you can view the bridge as it is getting destroyed by Death Eaters. You can find the bridge between the Blackfriars Bridge and the Southwark Bridge, in one line with the St. Paul’s Cathedral.
5. Gringotts Bank
You could see this building in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The Australia House in London was used as the Gringotts Bank. This only means the interior shots of Gringotts. Unfortunately, the Australia House is not open to public, but you can watch the building from the outside. You can find the building close to Covent Garden and Holborn Station is the metro station most close to the place.
6. Reptile House, London Zoo
You could see the reptile house in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In the first part of the movie, Harry and his uncle, aunt an cousin are going to the zoo. Here you can see that Harry can talk to snakes. The zoo is used for interior and exterior shots. You can find London Zoo close to Camden Town and Regent’s Park. You can watch the zoo from the outside, but when you would like to go into the zoo, you have to pay entrance fee of course.
Tour around the famous spots
In the first place, I was orientating for something like a tour along the film locations. I read on several websites and blogs that there were special tours organised for the Harry Potter film locations. Unfortunately, at the moment I wanted to book the tour, it was already fully booked. I only stayed one day in London, so there was no possibility to see the locations by tour anymore.
The organisation I was looking at, was Britmovietours. When you are going to London and would like to do a Harry Potter tour, you should definitely take a look at the website. You can book a tour by foot (click) or by bus (click). In my experience I think it is best to book a while in advance, then you are sure you will have a place.
Marvel through the Harry Potter Park
When you are planning to go for a longer time to London, you should definitely consider to pay a visit to the Harry Potter Park nearby the city. Here you can find all film attributes and sets that has been used during the shooting of the films. I only had one day in London, so too short to go to the park, but it is still on my wish list. The park is called Warner Bros, Studios Leavesden and you can take a look on the website by clicking here. An individual ticket for an adult costs £35.00 (€ 45,-).
When you go through the internet, you will find a few more places which are in relation with the Harry Potter movies. However, I think the ones mentioned in this article were the most important and big ones. Are you a Harry Potter fan as well and have you already been to one of these places? Let me know in the comment section!
