Eco hotel Uxlabil Atitlán, a hotel located along the lake on the mountainside between San Juan La Laguna and San Pedro La Laguna, is a quiet retreat with an amazing view on lake Atitlán. The hotel has four floors where you can spend time in hammocks overlooking the lake while enjoying the breeze that comes off the water. It is an amazing hotel with nice facilities and some of the friendliest staff I have ever met.

Location of Eco-Hotel Uxlabil Atitlán
Eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán is situated along the lake on the mountainside between San Juan La Laguna and San Pedro La Laguna (10-15 min. walk to both). The traditional town of San Juan La Laguna is famous for its artists and murals that can admired all over town and San Pedro La Laguna is a tourist destination known for its Spanish language schools, restaurants, and night life.
The hotel can best be accessed via San Juan. From the boat dock in San Juan, it is just a short walk of approximately five minutes to the hotel. Best is not to follow the main road, but to take the small path that goes along the lake and through the corn fields. The path to the hotel from the main road is a bit steep down, while the path along the lake is more fun and adventurous. Since the main road goes right behind the hotel, you hear some chicken buses honking as they go into town (also during the night). I was not bothered by it and slept fine. The hotel also has its own dock that can be accessed by public boats. Just ask your driver to drop you off at the hotel’s dock.

Uxlabil is a chain of eco-friendly hotels located at Lake Atitlán, Antigua and Guatemala City, where you can enjoy nature and culture. Eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán is situated on the mountainside along lake Atitlán and has a beautiful view of the lake and Cerro del Rostro Maya (the Indian’s nose mountain).
The hotel is very nice and the staff are some of the friendliest I have ever met.
The hotel has four floors, all with balconies looking over Lake Atitlan. On the balconies are several chairs and hammocks available. I spent most of my downtime reading in a hammock overlooking the lake. I definitely didn’t get bored of the view.
At the hotel, it is also easy to walk down to the lake, to enjoy some kayaking or swimming. Eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán is a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the towns!
Rooms of Eco-Hotel Uxlabil Atitlán
Eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán offers 4 different room types, all overlooking lake Atitlán; a double room with one single bed and one double bed, a double room with a double bed, a triple room with three single beds or two single beds and one double bed and a quadruple room with two single beds and a double bed. I was spending the weekend in a double room with a double bed.
All rooms of eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán are named after several birds that can be seen in Atitlan.
The room I stayed in was clean and pleasant with a comfortable bed, wardrobe, table, chair, a balcony with two chairs, and complimentary strong WiFi. The view from my bed was truly amazing and I have to admit that I spent a lot of time in my bed enjoying the fantastic view. There was no television in the room, but that was fine, since I didn’t get bored of the view anyway. The bathroom had a nice hot shower.
Facilities of Eco-Hotel Uxlabil Atitlán
There are plenty of things to do at eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán and in the nearby towns. The hotel has a nice organic garden where you can find fragrant and flavorsome herbs and vegetables, that are used in the restaurant menu. On the property is also a Mayan Sauna (temazcal) available that is heated with firewood and scented with medicinal plants. The sauna only costs Q75 per group (maximum 6 people). I loved the sauna! You can also take a traditional massage.
The hotel also offers unlimited kayaking. They have three kayaks available for the hotel guests. Fun activity!
Eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán also offers different options to explore the local culture of San Juan La Laguna or to explore the nearby nature. You can for instance go on an Atitlan cruise (private boat of the hotel), coffee or birdwatching tour, learn about the local crafts, medical plants, and weaving, or hike to the Indian Nose or San Pedro volcano.
I went on a birdwatching tour with the super friendly and knowledgeable guide Juan. At 06:00 AM we set foot to El Cerro del La Cruz (the cross hill) to explore different birds along the way and end the tour with a stunning view of San Juan La Laguna and Lake Atitilán. Along the way we spotted different exotic birds like the rufous browed peppershrike, the bronzed cowbird, and beautiful blue-tailed hummingbirds. It was fun and a nice morning exercise!
Food of Eco-Hotel Uxlabil Atitlán
At eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán, you will find a cozy restaurant that overlooks lake Atitlán. The menu card of the hotel is limited for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, there are about five options and for lunch and dinner about four. When it is busy, there is a breakfast buffet with unlimited food! Although the food options on the regular menu card are limited, the taste of the food is great and the service is amazing. Roza and Gloria were great chefs and I loved hearing all their stories about San Juan La Laguna and Guatemala in general. The staff from eco-hotel Uxlabil Atitlán are all originally from San Juan La Laguna.
