An exciting day trip to Gili Nanggu, Tangkong, Kedis and Sudak

When I ask you about the Gili islands in Indonesia, you probably know Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. But do you know that there are more Gili islands around Lombok? Islands that are even more pretty? A day trip to Gili Nanggu is like being transported to a completely different world, or at least a different Indonesia! No traffic, no crowds and no vendors, but just unexploited nature and plenty of tropical fish. This post will introduce you to the paradise islands of Lombok: Gili Nanggu, Gili Tangkong, Gili Kedis, and Gili Sudak.

How to reach Gili Nanggu?

Gili Nanggu is the most famous Gili of the South-Western Gili islands, but all of them are natural beauties and have unexploited nature. The islands are located at the southwest of Lombok and can only be reached by boat. Most boats are departing from Lembar or West Sekotong.

Together with two friends I booked a day trip with our favorite guide Djoky. He drove us from Senggigi to West Sekotong, where we took a boat to the Gili islands. From West Sekotong it took 15 minutes to reach the first island. If you depart from Lebar, it will take around 40 minutes.

I can recommend to book a private driver or complete package tour, so you don’t have to search for a boat yourself. In almost any tourist office you can find a day trip to Gili Nanggu or you can contact our local guide Djoky yourself. I can really recommend to travel around with Djoky! How much does a day trip from Lombok to the Gili islands cost?

The price for a charter boat (4-6 persons max.) will vary greatly. It will probably cost you between 250.000 – 500.000 IDR from West Sektotong for a day trip including snorkeling material.

A day trip tour to Gili Nanggu

Below you can see my itinerary to the Southern Gili Islands:

– Drive from Senggigi or Kuta to West Sekotong or Lembar
– Take a boat to Gili Nanngu
– Snorkel for two hours at Gili Nanggu
– Take a boat to Gili Kedis
– Snorkel for one hour at Gili Kedis
– Take a boat to Gili Sudak
– Have lunch at Gili Sudak and snorkel some minutes
– Take a boat to Gili Tangkong
– Snorkel for two hours at Gili Tangkong
– Boat back to West Sekotong or Lembar
– Drive back to Senggigi, Kuta, or another place in Lombok

On Gili Nanggu

Gili Nanggu is the most beautiful island of these four Gili’s. There is almost nothing going on. So far, I believe there is only one accommodation and one restaurant on the island. We did some snorkeling around Gili Nanggu and there was plenty of beautiful coral and colorful fish around. The beaches at Gili Nanggu are tropical white and you can find crystal blue waters.

On Gili Kedis

Gili Kedis is the tiniest island. It is probably not bigger than the size of a tennis court and has the shape of a heart. You won’t find anything on the island, except from some trees in the middle. There are not so many fish around, but it is worth trying some snorkeling.

On Gili Sudak

After visiting Gili Nanggu and Gili Kedis, it was time for lunch at Gili Sudak. This island is a bit smaller than Gili Nanggu and known as the ‘lunch island’. There are around four warungs where you can order all kind of local dishes like ‘Gado Gado’, ‘Nasi Goreng’, or ‘local fish’.

Gili Tangkong

Our last stop was at Gili Tangkong, another paradise island like Gili Nanggu. Here, we also snorkeled and saw plenty of beautiful coral and fish. On this island, you can also find a nice swing and some amazing photo spots.

Some practical tips for visiting Gili Nanggu, Tangkong, Kedis, and Sudak

Here are some practical tips to ensure your day trip to Gili Nanggu, Tangkong, Kedis, and Sudak is smooth and enjoyable:

1. Early Start: Begin your day trip early in the morning to maximize your time on the islands. Most tours depart from Lombok in the morning.
2. Choose a Reputable Tour Operator: Research and book your day trip with a reputable tour operator in Lombok. Look for reviews and recommendations to ensure a reliable and safe experience.
3. Pack Light: Bring only the essentials. Essentials include sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, swimwear, a change of clothes, a waterproof bag for your belongings and a (underwater) camera.
4. Get a reliable wetsuit: Snorkeling is an enjoyable activity to do when traveling to different places. However, it is also important to take caution as there are harmful things that can irritate the skin such as jellyfish sting and many more. Cut the chances of itchy skins and bumps by having a heavy duty and protective wetsuit.
5. Cash: Bring some cash with you to purchase snacks, lunch, drinks or souvenirs.
6. Water and Snacks: Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. Pack some snacks like energy bars or fruits to keep your energy up between island visits.
7. Footwear: Comfortable, waterproof sandals or water shoes are recommended. You’ll be walking on sandy beaches and might need to wade in the water when getting on and off boats.
8. Underwater Gear: If you plan to snorkel, consider bringing your own snorkeling equipment. While some tours provide gear, it’s often more comfortable to use your own mask and snorkel.
9. Stay Hydrated: The tropical sun can be intense. Reapply sunscreen regularly and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
10. Respect the Environment: Help preserve the natural beauty of these islands by not leaving any trash behind. Follow the principle of “leave no trace.”
11. Be Mindful of Wildlife: While snorkeling, avoid touching or disturbing marine life and coral reefs. Enjoy observing from a respectful distance.
12. Weather Awareness: Be aware of the weather forecast. Island-hopping trips can be affected by adverse weather conditions. In such cases, the tour operator may need to alter the itinerary or reschedule.
13. Motion Sickness: If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider taking motion sickness medication before the boat trip.
