Hostel Review: Good Bye Lenin Hostel

A little while ago, I travelled for a weekend to Poland and visited the two beautiful cities Krakow and Warsaw. Although it was a short time, we have seen much of the two cities. One of the important things of this trip, was to not spend that much money during the weekend. We bought cheap tickets and wanted to book some cheap accommodations as well. That is how we ended up at the Good Bye Lenin Hostel in Krakow for our first night. It was only approximately € 10,- per person including breakfast! In this article I will tell you some more about this hostel and if I can recommend this yes or no.

Location
I have to say, when we arrived, the hostel was very hard to find. We had to go through a small street and to walk along the backside of buildings at the big road to find the entrance of the hostel. However, the hostel has a perfect location. Close to the hostel, you can find many restaurants, shops and bars. It’s located in the district Kazimierz, which is a Jewish quarter. You can still find some synagogues in this quarter. If you would like to go to old town, you can easily walk (if you don’t mind). The way towards the old town will take around 20/30 minutes walking distance. On the other side of the Wisla, which is close to the hostel, you can find the Schindler Museum, which is absolutely worth a visit. In short, the location of Good Bye Lenin is very central in the city.

Facilities
The most important facility of the hostel, is its private bar with pool table where you can have a really fun night together with the others who are staying in the hostel. You can find the bar in the basement of the hostel, which is decorated very trendy. In the morning, you can also have breakfast in the basement. There is a kitchen where you can grab your own plate and cutlery and in the middle of the bar, on a table, you can find some bread, milk and more. It’s simple, but surely good.

Next to the bar, there is also an outdoor area with a barbecue, where you can have a nice time during summer. Furthermore, there is a relaxing room with a very large projection screen which can be used during sport events and for films.

– Saturday: Happy hour for the whole night
– Sunday: Movie night and barbecue

Shortly, in this hostel you sure have the right ingredients to have a good time!

Rooms
There are several room types where you can chose from. If you would like to have a private room, there is a possibility, but you always have to share the bathroom. Besides private twin rooms, you can also chose for a mixed dorm for four persons, six persons, eight persons or ten persons. During my time, I stayed in a room with three bunk beds, so meant for six persons. Although I didn’t mind sleeping with five others, I didn’t sleep well at all. The hostel is very nice and when you look at the price you pay, I shouldn’t complain, but the beds where not that great.

The mattress was used so many times, that there was a pit in it, so it wasn’t very comfortable sleeping on it. Furthermore, during the night it was raining, which normally wouldn’t be a problem, but there was a leak somewhere in the ceiling, which made me hear the noise of raindrops the whole night. A good thing about the room is the fact that we all had a, sort of, safe where we could keep our personal stuff. That felt good to me.

Diner possibilities
In this hostel, you cannot have dinner. However, there are many restaurants with Polish dishes in the neighbourhood of the hostel. In the morning there is a free breakfast for everyone which is simple, but good. You can make your own coffee or tea as well.

Prices
The prices for this hostel are so low! Although the rooms are not that great, if you’re a big budget traveller, this hostel is definitely something for you. For € 10,- you can have your stay and breakfast for one night. If you would like to stay in a private room, the price will be approximately € 30,- for a night including breakfast. If you are a budget traveller and aren’t looking for a perfect stay, this hostel is perfect for you! Especially the location makes it a hostel to book. If you have a little more to spend and are looking for a quite better accommodation, I would recommend you to do that. Although the staff is very friendly and the hostel itself is great, the rooms can use some renovation.
