Hotel Review: Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand – Norway
Just between the beautiful nature of the Sognefjord, you can find the town Balestrand. During our trip from Oslo to Bergen, we stayed here one night and although there was a shorter route from Oslo to Bergen, paying a visit to Balestrand and the Sognefjord definitely was worth the visit. During our stay in Balestrand, we stayed at the Kviknes Hotel. In this article I will tell you some more about the hotel and my experience.
General description
Hotel Kviknes has been built in 1877 by the Kvikne family. Nowadays, this family still is the host of this classic and beautiful hotel. The hotel was built in the Swiss style. There have been many new building, reconstructions and extensions since, but none of this has altered the special character of this place. Kviknes is now a modern hotel with old-world charm and atmosphere. Besides, it’s one of the largest tourist hotels in Norway. The hotel is graced with an extensive collection of artworks and antiques, which give its special style.
Location
The Kviknes Hotel has a perfect location in the middle of the Sognefjord. Although Balestrand isn’t that big, you can definitely enjoy yourself during your stay in Balestrand. There are some hiking possibilities and with good weather you can swim in the water. It’s a beautiful location to stop at during your trip from Oslo to Bergen. In this way, you can explore the magnificent fjords Norway has to offer.
Facilities
The hotel consists out of a large restaurant where you can eat à la carte or in buffet. Furthermore, the hotel has several lounge areas where you enjoy the beautiful views. In the bar you can have a drink in the evening or throughout the day. There are some acitivities which are organised by the hotel and in which you can participate during your stay. In total, hotel Kviknes has around 190 guest rooms.
Hotel room
There are both hotel rooms in the older- as in the newer part of the hotel. Like you can see above on the photos, there is quite a difference between both of the rooms. I stayed in the older part of the hotel, but have to say that the hotel room still was very spacious, good and clean. Of course it could use some renovation, but I still had a nice stay. The room had perfect views over the mountains, the town and the water and was very clean. We had a sitting area and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom also was good and there was nothing to complain about.
However, if you are planning a stay in the Kviknes Hotel and would like to have a newer room, take into account to mention this during your booking process.
Restaurant
The hotel features a restaurant where you can have breakfast or have diner in the evening. For diner you can chose between à la carte and buffet. During our stay in the hotel, we chose the buffet; which was absolutely delicious and there was many variety in dishes. However, keep in mind that having diner in the restaurant isn’t that cheap. At the end, we payed around € 130,- (including two glasses of wine) for the buffet. I found this very expensive.
The breakfast was already included for our stay and this also was really good. There were many possibilities on the buffet which you could try out. I had a nice breakfast.
Price
If you are looking for a budget accommodation, this is not the right hotel for you. If you’re traveling through the Sognefjord and would like to have a quite luxurious hotel with a magnificent location and for a good price, than you’re at the right place at the Kviknes Hotel. The price-quality ratio is definitely good. You can book this hotel via Booking.com.
Overview
This overview is a summary of the points written above. I’ll give a point from one star until five stars where one star is very bad and five stars is very good.
Location: ***** Room Size: **** Room attributes: **** Bathroom: **** Facilities: *** Price-quality: **** Above you can find how I think about the several subjects regarding the hotel. It’s a beautiful, classic hotel with a perfect location just in the middle of the Sognefjord. The rooms are devided into a older and newer part in the hotel. Although we stayed at an “older” room, it was still very good. The rooms are spacious and everything you need is there. Despite the fact that the hotel isn’t a budget accommodation, there is definitely a good price-quality ratio, because it’s a four star hotel.
Address: Kviknevegen 8, 6899 Balestrand, Norway
