Hotel Tolimán: The perfect place to unwind at lake Atitlán
It has been two months since I arrived in Guatemala. Spending most of the time in Panajachel, I was looking for a different experience and a different place to unwind nearby lake Atitlán. Via the internet, I came across hotel Tolimán in San Lucas Toliman, a hotel tucked between two volcanoes and another high ridge of mountains. The hotel was beautiful and one of the best places I have stayed in Guatemala. In this post, I will tell you why.

Location of hotel Tolimán
If you’re looking for somewhere to completely unwind, Hotel Toliman is the place. Hotel Tolimán is located on Lake Atitlán, in the town of San Lucas Tolimán, also called “The Hidden Gem of Lake Atitlán”, as it is one of the few towns around the lake that conserves its authentic charm. It is a town not visited by many tourists and only has around 17,000 inhabitants.
Hotel Tolimán is tucked between two volcanoes and another high ridge of mountains. The hotel is surrounded by lovely gardens and offers breathtaking views of the lake. The hotel also supports community development and environmental conservation.

Rooms of hotel Tolimán
Hotel Toliman offers 10 different room types, all traditionally designed and offering great comfort. I was spending the weekend in a spacious garden room with king size bed. The room was really cozy and was perfectly clean. My bedroom was equipped with a king size bed, wardrobe, table, chairs, and complimentary water and complimentary strong WiFi. The only thing missing, was a television. The bathroom had one of the best showers I have ever used in a hotel in Guatemala and free toiletries.

Facilities of hotel Tolimán
The garden of hotel Tolimán is great. There are plenty of beautiful flowers, plants, hammocks and swings, just a great place to unwind, to sit, or to read a good book. Next to the main garden, the hotel has a large organic vegetable garden. The restaurants use the herbs and veggies from their garden in their menu. In the garden, you can also find a beautiful pool with sun loungers and chairs.

The hotel offers different options to travel around the Lake with a guide. You can for instance try a weaving lesson, traditional fishing, kayak to thermal springs, visit local crafts workshops, or take a coffee tour or relaxing massage. Furthermore, you can ask for a complimentary tour through the hotel’s organic garden or use one of the complimentary canoes and kayaks to take a loop closer by. The staff is helpful and will carry the canoes and kayaks into the water for you. Great service!

Food of hotel Tolimán
Hotel Tolimán’s restaurant serves delicious local and international food. Most of the dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients from their own garden. The view from the deck is beautiful and I loved eating breakfast out there every morning. I can really recommend the typical Guatemalan breakfast with oatmeal, sweet bread, black tortillas, eggs, fried banana, beans, local cheese, and some good coffee. While eating your dish, you can enjoy watching the hummingbirds flying around the deck or just enjoy the amazing view.

Prices of hotel Tolimán
Hotel Tolimán is a good place for travelers with a customary to large budget. Room rates differ between 315 Q (around € 37,00) and 1,000 Q (around € 117,00) per room, per night. When staying with two persons in the cheapest room, it will only cost you around 185 Q (around € 22,00) per person, including breakfast. You can book via Booking.com. You will get great value for money and a wonderful experience! The food and drinks in the restaurant and bar are also priced affordable and convenient.

Hi there, thanks so much for this. I’m going back to Central America next year and Lake Atitlan has been on my bucket list for ages. Now I have a bit of insight on where to go. How have you found living in Guatemala in general? 🙂

Hi Rosie, nice to hear Lake Atitlán is on your bucket list. I am living in Panajachel at the moment, so directly at the lake. It is a beautiful town , the biggest and busiest of the lake, with plenty of things to do during the day and evenings =) People are super friendly, traditional food is great, and nature is absolutely stunning. There are not many things I don’t like about Guatemala. If you want to receive more in-depth info, please send us a direct message via social media or email and I am happy to tell you more about my experience! Hope you can visit Lake Atitlán soon! =)
