Exploring the beautiful Reeuwijkse Plassen by lopifit
It’s probably not something most people think of, but if you visit the Netherlands or the Reeuwijkse Plassen in particular, then a lopifit (electric walking bike) is a great way to explore the beautiful natural surroundings. Walking has never been so much fun and this is the best travel tip I can give anyone who visits the Netherlands! Let me take you along.
The world’s electric walking bike: de Lopifit
The Lopifit is a totally new way of moving. It’s a Dutch invention that makes it possible to cover large distances on foot. To get moving on the Lopifit, all you have to do is walk at a normal pace to push the treadmill belt backwards. An onboard sensor registers the movement and activates the motor to propel the bike. You can easily reach the speed of a cyclist. It’s a unique experience and a wonderful sensation.
Lopifit: practical information
The treadmill bike, legally a bicycle with pedal assistance, has six gears and a maximum speed of 25 kilometers (15 miles) per hour. There is no legal minimum age requirement. Helmet, driver’s license and registration number are also not prescribed. The place on the road is the bike path if there is one.
Exploring the beautiful Reeuwijkse Plassen by lopifit
In the yard of a Dutch farm in Reeuwijk-Tempel, 30 lopifits are displayed and ready to be rented out. Tamara and I rented both a lopifit and are eager to try this unique transportation method. This rental company provides twelve packages that include a lunch, a high-tea, a tour of a cheese farm or a visit to the De Molen brewery in Bodegraven. We decided to go our own way and ride our own route along the Reeuwijkse plassen, a beautiful nature area nearby.
First we get a short instruction on how the electric drive of the bike works. We also receive a phone number for help and support along the way, if necessary.
Soon it’s time to try it out for ourselves in a few laps. It looks simple, but it’s not that easy at the beginning. Suddenly I forget how to walk and I have to get off to see how I move my legs normally when I walk. It’s important to keep walking while cycling. Okay, I’ll try it again. After a few hundred meters, I get the hang of it and move smoothly along the Dutch bike paths.
We decided to explore the Green Heart (in Dutch Groene Hart), a relatively thinly populated area of the Netherlands covering much of the middle portion of the Randstad megalopolis. The major Dutch cities of Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam and Utrecht surround this area.
In and around Boskoop, Bodegraven, Waddinxveen and Gouda you can find some lovely cycling routes in the wide open polder countryside. We did a tour around the Reeuwijkse Plassen. Reeuwijkse plassen is located in the Green Heart and is surrounded by picturesque villages, historic farms, ponds, and lakes.
We used the Route.nl application and followed the official Dutch cycle path marking numbers: 21-20-49-36-37-50-47-48-49-21. This beautiful route was around 26 kilometers long and took us about 3,5 hours. We made a pit stop at a local salmon and eel distillery where we ate a fresh salmon sandwich, at a local ice cream shop, and in a beautiful little park.
Besides the beautiful nature, it was also incredibly fun to look at all the different houses. We saw little cute houses, but also big villas where ferraris were parked in front.
Exploring the beautiful Reeuwijkse Plassen by lopifit was so much fun! It was a healthy day that brought ultimate walking pleasure.
