The Netherlands

Virtual ways to experience the Netherlands

While travel has come to a near standstill during the coronavirus pandemic, technology is allowing you to visit The Netherlands in the blink of an eye. If you have already booked or if the Netherlands is one of your dream destinations, enjoy the attractions and museums, nature and gardens, and art online ahead of your visit.

Here, I’ve got a list of virtual tours, plus some other cool travel experiences to have from the comfort of your couch. Enjoy!

Nature and gardens

The Netherlands boasts a rich variety of nature. The largest national park is De Hoge Veluwe, which is best explored on one of its thousand free-to-use white bikes. We also have beautiful windswept dunes and thick woodlands. Natuurmonumenten has compiled a selection of tranquil landscapes to enjoy via Google Street View. Click your way around Schiermonnikoog National Park, The Dunes of Texel or De Biesbosch. Another great thing to do is to put on some headphones and enjoy a scenic virtual walk past the picturesque village of Zaanse Schans and its windmills!

You’ve probably also heard of the Keukenhof gardens, one of the world’s largest flower gardens, situated in the town of Lisse, in the Netherlands. During spring, you can virtually wander through the Keukenhof gardens, admiring its beautiful tulips. Another great thing to see is the Japanese Garden, which is the only Japanese Garden in the Netherlands. This beautiful garden is only open twice a year.

A day at the beach

The beach… The true symbol of summer! We have some wonderful beaches. The North Sea beach of Schiermonnikoog is amongst the broadest in Europe, and the cleanest in the Netherlands. Lay your towel on the beach and tune in digitally to the sound of the waves and the calming view. Webcams have been set up at beaches throughout The Netherlands. From Scheveningen to the Wadden Islands, and everywhere in between, like this one, live from the beach at Zandvoort.

Art and exhibitions

Many museum collections in the Netherlands can be viewed online. Take a virtual tour of a museum or zoom in on the greatest works of art. Have fun with the Rijksmuseum’s collection or take a virtual tour of The Van Gogh Museum. Don’t miss the Kroller-Muller Museum or virtually take a tour of the modern art Groninger Museum.

Attractions and monuments

The Netherlands’ most popular attractions are also welcoming visitors digitally. The Anne Frank House offers tours of the secret annex. If you are interested in castles, visit one of Netherlands prettiest castles: Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot. Adventure seekers can also roam around Efteling theme park:

What about having a drink as you walk through the Heinkenen Experience virtually? Or virtually around Madurodam. If you’re a lover of cheese, buy some Gouda and watch a virtual tour of the Gouda Cheese Market where they explain some of the traditions and showcase the bustling market!

I hope you enjoyed seeing some cool travel experiences from the Netherlands.
Stay safe and healthy!
