The Pyramid of Austerlitz

At 36 feet tall (11 meters), the Pyramid of Austerlitz is a surprising sight in the middle of the forest! Built by the French in 1804 to honor Napoleon’s victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, this pyramid stands out as one of The Netherlands’ coolest and most unique landmarks. Inspired by the Egyptian pyramids, it was constructed in just 27 days. The original wooden obelisk on top was replaced in 1894 with a stone obelisk, which still stands today.

Climbing the pyramid is quick and easy, and once you reach the top, the views are absolutely amazing! Additionally, you’ll find signs at each corner explaining the sights around you.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit? I would say: Autumn! The forest transforms into a colorful wonderland of reds, oranges, and yellows, making it a wonderful time to hike to the Pyramid of Austerlitz.

The Pyramid of Austerlitz has different opening times depending on the day and season:

  • Winter season (November – March): Open only on Sundays from 12:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • Summer season (April – October): Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

How to Travel to the Pyramid of Austerlitz?

If you travel by car, you can park for free at the official parking near the visitor centre, making it an easy starting point for your hike to the pyramid. Another option, my favorite, is to park for free at the Pancake Restaurant Bergzicht, a great place to start your hike and end your trip with a delicious Dutch pancake 🙂

Getting to the Pyramid of Austerlitz by public transport is also very easy, making it an ideal day trip from cities like Utrecht or Amsterdam.

Start by taking a train with NS, the national train carrier in the Netherlands. You can catch a train to Driebergen-Zeist Station, a major stop near the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It’s a good idea to download the NS app (Google Play or App Store), which provides up-to-date travel information, including platform changes and real-time departure times.

Once you arrive at Driebergen-Zeist Station, you have two options to reach the Pyramid of Austerlitz: you can either hop on a 15-minutes bus ride or enjoy a 30-minute walk.

From Driebergen-Zeist Station, you can take bus 50 (direction Utrecht, Vaartsche Rijn) to the Austerlitz, Pyramide stop. Make sure to check the latest bus schedule using the NS app or 9292.nl (Google Play or App Store) app for up-to-date travel information.

If you prefer to start your adventure right away, walking from the station is a great option. The route takes you through a beautiful landscape.

As for payment on the train and bus, make sure you have your OV-chipkaart ready, the Dutch public transport card that works on trains, trams, and buses. You can easily load credit onto your card using the NS app or at ticket machines in stations. Once you’ve done that, simply check in when you board and check out when you arrive at your destination. This ensures smooth and hassle-free travel on public transport.

A Walk Through the Forest to the Pyramid of Austerlitz

One of the best ways to experience the Pyramid of Austerlitz is with a walk through the beautiful autumn forest. I parked for free at Pancake Restaurant Bergzicht and set off on a 30-minute hike through the forest. There are several paths to reach the pyramid, and I used Google Maps to navigate easily through the forest. The forest was full of autumn mushrooms! 🙂

When you arrive at the pyramid, you’ll need to purchase an entrance ticket, which costs only €4 per adult (children ages 4–12 pay €1.75, and children up to 3 years old are free of charge). This small fee helps support the dedicated volunteers who maintain the site. Afterward, you can climb the pyramid via a well-kept, steep staircase.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by a tower offering stunning views of the surrounding forest. Additionally, each corner of the platform has informative signs, which explain what you’re looking at, further enhancing your experience. You can see far into the distance, with interesting sights in Utrecht and even as far as Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Around the base of the pyramid, there are picnic tables where you can relax and enjoy the scenery before heading back.

Afterward, I hiked back to the pancake restaurant and treated myself to a delicious Dutch pancake—this was the perfect way to refuel after my outdoor adventure and an ideal ending to a great day!

Tip: the Pyramid of Austerlitz is a great spot to watch the sunset!
