When are the Cologne Christmas Markets?
Most Christmas markets in Cologne open in late November and remain open until 23 December. Some markets stay open until the end of December. Opening dates may vary slightly each year, so it’s always a good idea to check before your visit.
How to get to Cologne
One of the best things about Cologne is how easy it is to reach.
- By train: If you’re travelling from the Netherlands or Belgium, the high-speed ICE trains take you directly to Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station). From Amsterdam, the journey takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes, while traveling from Utrecht takes approximately 2 hours. As soon as you leave the station, you’ll be greeted by the impressive Cologne Cathedral and the city’s largest Christmas market.
- By car: Driving to Cologne is straightforward via the German motorway network. Keep in mind that parking in the city centre can be expensive, especially during the Christmas season. Parking at a Park & Ride location and continuing by public transport is often the easiest option.
- By plane: Cologne Bonn Airport is located about 15 minutes from the city centre by train. It’s a convenient option if you’re visiting from further away.

The 8 Best Christmas Markets in Cologne
1. Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral (Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom)
I think that the Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral is the city’s most famous and spectacular market. It’s located directly beside the iconic cathedral and Köln Hauptbahnhof (location). This market features more than 150 beautifully decorated stalls selling handmade gifts, festive decorations, delicious food, and warming drinks.
The highlight is the enormous Christmas tree standing in the middle of the square, surrounded by thousands of sparkling lights. Throughout the day and evening, live musicians perform on the central stage, creating an unforgettable Christmas atmosphere.
Tip: Climb the Cologne Cathedral for spectacular city views.

2. Cologne Old Town Christmas Market (Alter Markt)
Just a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral lies the charming Old Town Christmas Market (location). This family-friendly market is especially popular with children thanks to its nostalgic carousel, puppet theatre, and numerous toy stalls.
3. Heumarkt Christmas market (Heinzelmännchen)
Connected to the Old Town Market is the festive Heumarkt Christmas Market, also known as the Home of the Heinzelmännchen (location). The biggest attraction here is the large ice skating rink, where you can skate while enjoying festive music. Live performances add to the lively atmosphere throughout the season.
I also noticed that many Christmas ornaments and souvenirs were more affordable here than at some of the other markets, making this a great place to do your Christmas shopping.

4. Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt am Schokoladenmuseum
Located along the Rhine River in front of the famous Chocolate Museum, this market has a unique maritime theme (location). The wooden stalls resemble old sailing ships, creating a completely different atmosphere from the city centre markets. You’ll find plenty of seafood specialities alongside traditional German Christmas snacks, making this a wonderful stop if you’re looking for something different.
5. Neumarkt Christmas market (Market of the Angels)
The Neumarkt Christmas Market, also known as the Market of the Angels, is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Cologne (location). Thousands of tiny lights create the illusion of stars overhead while performers dressed as angels wander through the market. It’s easy to reach on foot or by tram and offers a wonderful selection of handmade gifts, festive decorations, and delicious seasonal food.

6. Rudolfplatz Christmas market (St. Nicholas Village)
Set in front of the medieval Hahnentorburg Gate, Rudolfplatz felt like stepping into a fairy tale (location). Often referred to as St. Nicholas Village, it’s one of the most family-friendly markets in Cologne. Children especially enjoy spotting Saint Nicholas while parents browse the beautifully decorated stalls.
7. Cologne’s LGBTQ+ Christmas Market (Heavenue)
Looking for something a little different? Heavenue is Cologne’s colourful LGBTQ+ Christmas market, located near Rudolfplatz (location). Everyone is welcome to enjoy its fun atmosphere, pink decorations, lively music, creative gifts, and playful Christmas displays. It’s one of the city’s most unique festive experiences. Love it!
8. Stadtgarten Christmas market
Hidden away in Cologne’s trendy Belgian Quarter, the Stadtgarten Christmas Market is perfect if you prefer a smaller and more local atmosphere (location). Instead of mass-produced souvenirs, you’ll discover handmade crafts, unique gifts, local artists, and changing stalls throughout the season. Every visit feels a little different.

Which Christmas market should you visit?
If you only have one day in Cologne, you can easily combine several Christmas markets on foot. A great walking route is:
- Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
- Alter Markt
- Heumarkt
- Harbour Christmas Market
- Neumarkt
- Rudolfplatz
- Heavenue
Along the way, you’ll discover plenty of festive streets, shops, cafés, and beautiful views of the Rhine.

Tips for visiting the Cologne Christmas Markets
Make the most of your visit with these practical tips:
- Try traditional German Christmas treats. Don’t leave without tasting Glühwein (hot mulled wine), Bratapfel (baked apple), Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (crispy potato pancakes), roasted chestnuts (Maronen), and freshly baked pastries. I always love trying traditional dishes and drinks!
- Collect the Christmas mugs. Every market serves drinks in its own beautifully designed mug. You’ll pay a small deposit (Pfand), usually around €3 to €5, which you get back when returning the mug. Many visitors keep one as a unique souvenir.
- Visit on weekdays if possible. Fridays and weekends can be extremely busy. Weekday afternoons or evenings offer a more relaxed experience.
- Wear warm clothing. You’ll spend a lot of time outdoors, so layers, gloves, and comfortable shoes are essential.
- Watch your belongings. Like many popular tourist attractions, Christmas markets attract pickpockets. Keep your valuables secure.

More things to do in Cologne
Planning to stay longer? There is much more to explore besides the Christmas markets. Don’t miss these popular attractions:
- Visit the famous Chocolate Museum
- Climb the Cologne Cathedral for spectacular city views
- Walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge and see thousands of love locks
- Explore Cologne’s colourful Old Town
- Take a Winter Rhine River cruise

Conclusion
Cologne is one of my favorite cities to visit during the Christmas season. Every market has its own unique atmosphere, and together they create one giant festive experience. It’s also very each to reach from The Netherlands. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or as a couple, you’re guaranteed to leave with wonderful memories (and probably a few Christmas mugs too!).
