The best Kuala Lumpur food tour: a culinary adventure

Embarking on a food tour in Kuala Lumpur is a gastronomic experience like no other. The Malaysian capital is a melting pot of diverse cultures and its vibrant food scene reflects this rich heritage. I recently joined a food tour in Kuala Lumpur and in this article I would love to take you with me on this culinary adventure.

A sweet kick off

Our food tour kicked off with an exploration of Kuala Lumpur’s fruits and vegetables on the local market. We tried the refreshing flavors of Dragon Fruit, Longan, Ciku, and Rambutan. These tropical fruits offer a delightful mix of sweetness and juiciness. The guide also explained us about the different types of vegetables, fish and meat that’s often used in the Malaysian cuisine.

Roti making class

After the fruit tasting, it was time to make my own roti, also called “flying bread”. I rolled out the dough and start challenging gravity by throwing it in the air and twirling it around. Unfortunately, I was not good at it and the chef had to make my roti to perfection. A few minutes later, a flaky and crispy flatbread (Roti Canai) was served with flavorful curry, showcasing the Indian influence on Malaysian cuisine. It was delicious and definitely one of my favorite dishes in Malaysia.

We also indulged in Apam Balik, a pancake filled with crushed peanuts, sweet corn, and sugar. This was a delightful combination of textures and flavors leaving me craving for more.

Trying Mee Goreng & Teh Ais

Next, we dove into the aromatic Mee Goreng Mamak, a stir-fried noodle dish infused with fragrant spices. We washed it all down with a refreshing glass of Teh Ais, a sweet and milky iced tea that provided the perfect respite from the heat.

Exploring the realm of traditional desserts

After the Mee Goreng and Teh Ais, we walked along some traditional desserts and decided to try some. We started with Putu Bambu, steamed rice cakes filled with palm sugar. For me, it was way too sweet, but others in my group loved it.

We also tried Chendol, a popular shaved ice dessert. This dessert was a mix of coconut milk, pandan-flavored jelly noodles, and palm sugar syrup. Unfortunately, also not really my thing.

Trying the infamous Durian

The infamous Durian is a fruit with a strong smell and unique custard-like flesh. The opinions about durian are very divided, but most people consider it as a delicacy. To me, it tasted like blue cheese. I enjoyed trying it, but wouldn’t eat it again anytime soon. I thought it tasted and smelled quite heavy haha.

Delving into the heart of Malaysian cuisine

Continuing our culinary exploration, we delved into the heart of Malaysian cuisine with Mee Kari, a savory noodle dish cooked in a rich curry broth. It was delicious!

After this, we tried Bihun Soup, a light rice noodle soup and Ikan Bakar, a grilled fish dish marinated in a spicy paste that infuses the fish with a smoky and charred flavor. I don’t normally order fish very quickly, because I don’t like the bones. It was nice to try the Ikan Bara anyway, because it was really delicious and the bones weren’t too bad afterwards.

No food tour in Kuala Lumpur would be complete without indulging in the Malaysian dish – Satay. We savored both Satay Malaysia and Satay Padang, skewers of marinated meat grilled over an open flame, served with a delicious peanut sauce.

And for a fusion twist, we ate a Malaysian-style burger, blending local spices and flavors with a Western classic.

Discovering some last delights

As we reached the end of our food tour, we discovered the delights of Mee Ayam, a chicken noodle dish infused with soy sauce and a variety of aromatic herbs and spices. The flavors were satisfying, epitomizing the Malaysian love for noodle dishes.

We also tried Otak Otak, a popular street food specialty consisting of grilled fish paste infused with a blend of aromatic spices, wrapped in a banana leaf. It had a very interesting texture and was not really my thing to be honest.

Finally, we savored Nasi Lemak, Malaysia’s national dish, consisting of blue coconut rice served with a variety of accompaniments, such as sambal, fried anchovies, fried chicken, peanuts, and cucumber. To quench our thirst, we had a refreshing Mango Shake.

The cultural aspects

The Kuala Lumpur food tour not only offered a culinary experience, but also provided a glimpse into the cultural of Malaysia. As we wandered through the streets, the guide explained us about the traditional Malay houses known as “kampung”. These wooden houses reflected the deep-rooted traditions of the Malaysian people. The tour ended at the iconic Saloma Bridge, which offered a breathtaking view of the majestic Petronas Twin Towers. We were lucky and saw the Petronas Towers in the colors of the rainbow, something rare.
