I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times, and in this article, I’ve gathered everything you need to know for visiting Vlieland. From how to get there to the must-do activities, I’ve got all the insider tips to make your Vlieland adventure unforgettable! Enjoy!

Estimated reading time: 25 minutes

General info about Vlieland and the Dutch Wadden Islands

The Dutch Wadden Islands are a hidden paradise in the North Sea, perfect for nature lovers like me! These islands (Vlieland, Texel, Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog) are part of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its unique tidal flats and amazing wildlife like seals and birds.

Vlieland is the second smallest island, with Oost Vlieland being the only village. The island doesn’t allow cars, so it’s all about exploring on foot or bike, just how I like it! It’s famous for its wide sandy beaches, dunes, forests, and rich birdlife. To me it’s the perfect place to unwind, get lost in nature, and enjoy some serious peace and quiet.

How to travel to Vlieland?

The only way to reach Vlieland is by ferry from Harlingen. The ferry service is operated by Rederij Doeksen, offering both a regular ferry (approximately 90 minutes) and a fast ferry (45 minutes). It’s recommended to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons. Visit the official website for more information.

On the ferry, you can store your large pieces of luggage in the luggage cars. Upon arrival, they will be placed outside on the dock. Small luggage can be taken on board.

Tip: most accommodations on Vlieland offer free luggage transfer from the ferry to the hotel. Check with your accommodation for details on how to arrange this service.

Parking near the harbor in Harlingen

Since you cannot take your car to Vlieland, you’ll need to park it in Harlingen. Several long-term parking options are available near the harbor, including:

  • Parking Harlingen (P1 & P2 & P3): Official parking lots near the harbor with a free shuttle service to the ferry (location). Simply book your space in advance via the official website. The address is Skieppedykje 1, 18872 NA, Midlum.
  • Parking Waddenpromenade: A parking garage underground (location) suitable for short term parking (for example 1 day). Less suitable if you plan to stay in Vlieland for a longer period.

How to get around in Vlieland?

Renting a bike is one of the best ways to get around in Vlieland. You can find reliable bicycle rental shops near the ferry terminal in Oost Vlieland. Some popular rental shops include Fietsverhuur Jan van Vlieland and Zeelen Fietsverhuur Vlieland. I liked the bikes from Fietsverhuur Jan van Vlieland better than Zeelen Fietsverhuur Vlieland. Both locations offer a variety of bikes, including e-bikes, for all types of riders.

Since 2024, Qbuzz has been providing public transport on Vlieland. There is a small public bus that operates on the island, connecting key locations such as the harbor, the village center, ‘t Posthuys, and popular nature spots. This bus is particularly useful for reaching some of the more remote areas. You can check the bus schedule on 9292 or Google Maps for up-to-date information.

What is the best time to visit Vlieland?

Vlieland is a great destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Summer (June-August): Perfect for beach days, cycling, and enjoying lively island life. It’s the busiest season, with warm weather and all restaurants and activities open.
  • Autumn (September): I loved visiting in September when the summer crowds had left, but the weather was still warm enough to travel around in a t-shirt. I enjoyed beach days and saw many birds during this peaceful time.
  • Winter (February): I also visited in February, when it was much colder and even snowy. Some activities and restaurants were closed, but the island was incredibly quiet, allowing me to enjoy the beach and some activities all by myself.
  • Spring (March-May): A great time for nature lovers as the island starts blooming. It’s quieter than summer but with milder weather, perfect for hiking and cycling.

I always love trying local specialties when traveling, whether it’s a food tour, a cooking class, or simply tasting regional delicacies. On Vlieland, there are plenty of delicious food-related activities to enjoy:

– Say Cheese! A tasty tour in Vlieland’s cheese bunker

Step into a former military bunker turned cheese paradise! Here, you’ll learn how Dutch cheeses age to perfection in this cool, humid hideaway. The star of the show? The famous Vlieland Seaweed Cheese! Don’t leave without a taste (trust me, your taste buds will thank you 😉). For more info and to book a guided tour, check out the official website.

– Try local Vlieland specialties

Vlieland has a long history with cranberries, which have become one of the island’s signature products. You’ll find cranberry-infused everything on the island. Think about cranberry jam, liqueur, tea, beer, chocolates, and even mustard! A must-try is Vlielander Cranberry Bitter, a delicious, slightly tart liqueur perfect as a souvenir or a warming drink after a long beach walk. Many restaurants and bakeries serve cranberry pie and other sweets, and you can buy fresh cranberry products in supermarkets or tourist shops in Oost-Vlieland.

– Enjoy a beer tasting at the Vlieland Brewery

Calling all beer lovers! Take a guided tour of Vlieland’s very own brewery and taste craft beers inspired by the island’s wild beauty. Meet the brewer, hear why Vlieland is such a special place for beer-making, and uncover the secrets behind Fortuna Vlieland’s unique brews. The grand finale? A tasting of four delicious beers. Tours are open to everyone 12 and up, but only those 18+ can join the tasting. Cheers! 🍻 For tickets and details, check out the brewery’s official website.

Best things to do in Vlieland

There are plenty of fun things to do in Vlieland! Here are some of the best activities:

– Hop on the Vliehors Express – a must do in Vlieland!!! 😀

Hop on the Vliehors Express and let the adventure begin! Discover the vast, windswept sand plains of the Vliehors nature reserve while a guide tells hilarious stories. Sometimes a musician also comes on board. During the ride you will zoom through the dunes toward the island’s end, with plenty of chances to spot seals. You will make a stop at the Drenkelingenhuisje (location), where you can wander freely, explore the inside in small groups, and check out the treasures the sea has brought ashore over the years.

The Vliehors Express is one of the coolest experiences on Vlieland, and I can’t recommend it enough. For more details and to book your ride, check out the official website.

Tip: did you know the tires of the Vliehors Express leave a message in the sand? Now that’s a fun signature! Make sure to check it out.

– Explore the Vliehors (weekends only!)

Step into the wilderness of the Vliehors (location), a massive sandy plain that feels like a desert by the sea! Since the area is used for military training on weekdays, weekends are your chance to roam freely.

– Go shopping in the charming village Oost Vlieland

Reserve some time to explore Oost Vlieland, the island’s one and only village. Stroll along its picturesque street lined with cozy cafés and restaurants, unique local shops, and two handy supermarkets. Discover historic buildings, old churches, and hidden courtyards. Whether you’re sipping coffee on a sunny terrace, browsing for local souvenirs, or just soaking up the atmosphere, Oost Vlieland is a great place to slow down and enjoy island life.

Tip: make sure to visit De Parel, a lovely souvenir shop with homemade products!

– Check out the Webcam Vlieland

If you want to see live footage of the island’s beaches and marina, the webcam Vlieland is a great way to experience the island remotely.

– Spot spoonbills and kingfishers at the Kroon’s Polders

A true paradise for bird lovers! Throughout the year, you can spot all kinds of bird species here, including spoonbills and kingfishers. For the best views, settle into the birdwatching hut (location) or peek through the birdwatching wall (location). Both places are perfect for getting up close to nature without disturbing the wildlife. Don’t forget your binoculars! 😉

Tip: join a bird expedition organized by Paal 50 and discover the rich birdlife of the Kroon’s Polders!

– Visit the Posthuys Vlieland

Nestled near the Vliehors nature reserve, the Posthuys Vlieland (location) is a historic inn that’s perfect for a pit stop. Whether you’re here to enjoy a meal, sip on a drink, or simply take in the views of nature, the Posthuys is a must-visit in Vlieland. You can even spend the night here. Check out the details!

– Keep an eye on wildlife

Vlieland is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to rare species like the spoonbill and the majestic sea eagle. Keep an eye on the sandbanks too. You might just spot a group of lazy seals basking in the sun or bobbing in the waves.

– Explore Vlieland’s history through unique walks

Discover Vlieland’s rich history with two fascinating walks. The “Cultural-Historical Village Walk” guides you through the island’s past, revealing interesting stories and landmarks. For those keen on military history, the “Military-Historical Nature Walk” offers a deep dive into the island’s defense history while showcasing its beautiful natural surroundings. For more details, check out the Cultural-Historical Walk and Military-Historical Walk.

– Walk or cycle to the Vlieland lighthouse

Whether you hike or bike, I think the journey to Vlieland’s iconic red lighthouse is an adventure worth taking (location)! The steep path winds through a forest and up to Vuurboetsduin (the highest point on the island at 42 meters). Perched on top, the 18-meter-high lighthouse proudly watches over the island, offering an amazing view of the Wadden Sea, the North Sea, and even neighboring islands on a clear day. As soon as night falls, the lighthouse comes to life, casting its guiding beam in a unique rhythm (2 seconds on, 2 seconds off).

– Step back in time at museum Tromp’s Huys

Ever wondered what life on Vlieland was like centuries ago? At Museum Tromp’s Huys (location), the island’s oldest house, history comes to life! Once home to seafarers, whalers, and even the famous painter Betzy Akersloot-Berg, this cozy museum in Oost-Vlieland is packed with fascinating stories from the past. Stroll through exhibits about Vlieland’s whaling adventures, legendary shipwrecks, and dramatic naval battles. You’ll also find artifacts recovered from the Vliehors, where countless ships met their fate.

– Visit the marina and say cheese at the ‘Vlieland Groet U’ sign

I think the Marina Vlieland (location) is the perfect place to soak up the island’s charm. Watch boats come and go, feel the fresh sea breeze, and enjoy the lively harbor atmosphere. But the real highlight? Just outside the marina (location), you’ll find the famous “Vlieland Groet U” sign, a must-visit photo spot for every island guest! Strike a pose, snap a picture, and take home a memory of Vlieland’s warm welcome. Pretty cool right! 😀

But wait, there’s more! Nearby the sign stands a special statue with a hidden surprise. Press the button, and you’ll hear the dramatic tale of historic sea battles that once took place here.

– Go stargazing

Vlieland has minimal light pollution, making it one of the best places in the Netherlands for stargazing.

– Exploring Vlieland by boat is an absolute must

Take a seal-watching tour, sail on a historic ship like Zeilschip Willem Jacob, or, if you’re craving adventure, race over the waves on a speedboat! Most tours depart from Oost-Vlieland.

For a truly unique experience, join the Waddentocht Vlieland, a 3-hour adventure where you’ll cruise the Wadden Sea, walk on the seabed at low tide, and even fish for shrimp to cook, peel, and enjoy! More info: Waddenphoca.

Looking to island-hop? Eilandhopper offers sailing trips between Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog, perfect if you want to explore multiple Wadden Islands in one trip! (More info).

– Visit the local theatre and cinema

Podium Vlieland is a cultural hub on the island, offering a mix of film screenings, theater performances, and festivals. During the summer, special outdoor screenings are held in the dunes, and there are occasional performances at the nearby Fortuna Brewery with stunning views. For the full schedule and ticket info, visit Podium Vlieland.

– Try (water)sports activities

Activities such as kite surfing, paddleboarding, and sailing are available on the island.

– Join a mudflat hiking tour

Explore the Wadden Sea’s seabed during low tide on a guided mudflat hiking tour! Walk through wet sand, mud, and shallow channels, spotting crabs, shellfish, and seabirds. I think it’s messy, fun, and adventurous, so wear sturdy shoes and expect to get dirty!

– Step back in time at the Bunkermuseum Vlieland

Hidden among the dunes of Vlieland (location), the Bunkermuseum is like stepping into a secret world from the past! These restored World War II bunkers take you on a journey through history, where you can explore underground tunnels, check out wartime artifacts, and imagine what life was like for soldiers stationed here. The best part? Climbing up to the bunker rooftops rewards you with stunning island views!

– Other exiting things to do in Vlieland

Vlieland is packed with more exciting things to do, and the island’s calendar makes it super easy to find all the activities! Whether you’re into nature walks, bike rides, or local festivals, there’s always something happening.

Overview of the best beaches in Vlieland

Vlieland has long stretches of sandy beaches perfect for relaxing or swimming. Here’s a short list, including some lesser-known spots:

  1. Badstrand (main beach): the most accessible and family-friendly beach, ideal for swimming and sunbathing (location). Beach activities like kitesurfing and sandcastle building and a great spot for sunset views! Strandpaviljoen ‘t Badhuys is the only beachside restaurant available, serving seafood, sandwiches, snacks, dinner and drinks with a great sea view.
  2. Noordzee Strand (best sunset spot): stretches from Oost-Vlieland westward along the island’s coastline (location). It’s one of the widest beaches in the Netherlands, perfect for long, peaceful walks and a great spot for birdwatching and finding washed-up seashells. Often quieter than the main beach. There are no beach restaurants available, so bring your own picnic! Amazing for stargazing at night due to minimal light pollution.
  3. Vliehors (best for adventure): the far western side of Vlieland (location), accessible by foot or the Vliehors Express. This beach is a massive, untouched sandplain where you’ll feel like you’re on another planet. Since the area is used for military training on weekdays, weekends are your chance to roam freely. Seals are often seen resting near the sandbanks. There are no beach restaurants available.
  4. Posthuis Beach (best spot for seal watching): a beach near the Posthuys (location). A great place for a cycling trip, as it’s at the end of the main bike path. Home to many seabirds and perfect for nature photography. The beach is close to Restaurant het Posthuys, offering drinks, seafood, and Dutch pancakes!
  5. Strand Haven Oost-Vlieland (best for spotting boats): directly near the harbor of Oost-Vlieland (location). This is a small beach on the Wadden Sea side, offering a unique view of the ferry traffic and boats coming in and out. The water here is calmer compared to the North Sea side, making it a nice spot for a relaxing walk along the shore. You can often see seabirds feeding along the mudflats or seals. Several restaurants and cafés are nearby in the village of Oost-Vlieland.
  6. Noordoosthoek (best for birdwatching): a more remote area with a mix of sandbanks, mudflats, and marshlands at the northeastern tip of the island, beyond the harbor (location). This is one of the best areas for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons. You might also spot seals resting on sandbanks near the water. No beach restaurants available in this remote area, but you’re not far from Oost-Vlieland.
  7. Strandpaviljoen Oost (best for long walks): Just east of Oost-Vlieland, easy accessible from the village and close to Strandpaviljoen Oost, where you can enjoy food and drinks in summer (location). Perfect for a long walk along the coastline and one of the best spots on Vlieland to watch the sun go up. On windy days, you’ll see kitesurfers taking advantage of the strong breeze.

Here’s my list to the tastiest spots on the island, from cozy pancake houses to fine dining with stunning views:

  • Restaurant Zuiver (location): Enjoy a five-course dinner paired with a selected wine arrangement.

  • Restaurant Zeezicht Vlieland (location): Offers high-quality meals with fresh local ingredients.
  • Beach Pavilion ‘t Badhuys (location): Enjoy a meal with a view of the beach. I can only recommend having lunch here. Dinner wasn’t that great.
