Every five years, Amsterdam turns into the world’s sailing hub during Sail Amsterdam, one of the largest nautical events in the world. For a few days, the IJ River fills with tall ships, historic vessels, marine ships, and countless smaller boats. In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about Sail Amsterdam, from what it is and when it takes place, to the best viewing spots, how to experience it both from land and water, and practical tips to help you plan your visit. I’ll also share my own personal experience of this incredible event. Enjoy!

My own experience

My visit to Sail Amsterdam was unforgettable! In the early afternoon, I headed to Amsterdam to watch the ships arrive. I expected lots of people, like with the Amsterdam Gay Pride Parade, but it was much quieter than expected. It was busy when I stepped off the train, and outside Central Station there were many people along the shore, but the farther I walked away from the station, the quieter it became. My spot (in front of the Eric Vökel Riverfront Suites) was calm and peaceful, with almost no crowds.

I was so excited when I saw the first tall ship in the distance. With some drinks and snacks, I enjoyed the boat parade. The most amazing moment of Sail Amsterdam 2025 was seeing the tall ship from Peru. The crew climbed high up the sails and stood proudly above the boat. It was incredible to witness. Later, I explored Stenenhoofd and the IJpromenade for a livelier vibe.

In the evening, I enjoyed a two-hour sunset boat ride with unlimited drinks. Seeing the golden skies and the silhouettes of tall ships was the perfect ending to an amazing day. We sailed across the IJ and passed by all the ships. It was so cool to see them up close. The marine ships also brought great energy. I’ll never forget when they lowered a bucket so we could toss in beers and sodas from our boat, pulling it back up with big smiles and cheers.

I can truly recommend visiting Sail Amsterdam to anyone. It was much quieter than I expected, and the tall ships were really impressive, even taller than I could have imagined! The atmosphere was fantastic, and there was plenty of space to find a comfortable spot to watch the parade. The boat tour during Sail was the cherry on the cake and really made my day. I can definitely recommend it to everyone!

What is Sail Amsterdam?

Sail Amsterdam is a maritime festival that takes place once every five years, bringing together 800 impressive ships from all over the world. The highlight of the event is the arrival of the (tall) ships. Hundreds of ships sail into Amsterdam in a parade that kicks off the event. It’s truly a sight that gives you goosebumps!

But Sail is so much more than just watching ships sail by. For five days, Amsterdam transform into a lively festival ground. After the Sail In parade, the ships are docked for three days and you can board most of them. There are also plenty of cultural performances and entertainment. The last day when Sail Out happens, the ships say goodbye in a farewell parade.

Insider tip: while most people visit during the Sail In, the final day, the Sail Out, is often less crowded.

When is Sail Amsterdam?

The next edition (Sail Amsterdam 2030) is scheduled for August 2030, marking the 11th edition of this iconic festival. Dates and details are still to be confirmed, but expect it to follow the same 5-day Sail In → event days → Sail Out format.

Where is Sail Amsterdam?

The heart of Sail Amsterdam is the IJ River, the stretch of water that runs behind Amsterdam Central Station (location). The ships dock on both sides of the IJ. You can easily reach the area by train, tram, metro, or bike. Expect crowds, so plan extra travel time and make sure to check the most up-to-date travel advice, because some roads may be closed 😉

Is Sail Amsterdam free to visit?

Yes, Sail Amsterdam is free to visit. Boat tours and some special activities need tickets. It’s the largest freely accessible event in the Netherlands and in Europe.

Best places to see the Sail-In parade in Amsterdam

Finding the perfect viewing spot can make all the difference. Here are some of the best locations in my opinion:

-Easy accessible locations:

  • Central Station Boulevard (location): One of the easiest places to watch the parades. You can easily camp out on the wooden steps. Prepare for things to get crowded here.
  • Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (location): Another great point to camp out would be the IJ-haven, the ship’s final destination. You will find plenty of food trucks, as well as a great place to sit where everyone is on eye-level with each other due to a roof structure
  • IJpromenade (location): A long green strip by the canal, very popular with locals and tourists. Take a free ferry from Amsterdam Central Train Station to Buiksloterweg and arrive early to claim your space.
  • Eric Vökel Riverfront Suites (location): A hidden gem where I watched the ships enter. Almost no people around, great views, and even a café for (toilet/drinks) breaks. Bring binoculars for the best experience! 😉
  • NDSM Wharf (location): Located on the north side of the IJ, offering great views and a lively atmosphere. Take the ferry from Centraal Station to NDSM. Tip: if you have time left, make sure to visit the STRAAT Museum.
  • Ferries: Or hop on the ferries behind Central Station to cross the IJ. You’ll glide between the ships and it’s completely free.

– See the parade from above:

  • REM Eiland (location): This former pirate radio and TV station, now home to a restaurant, has a roof terrace that towers 22 meters above sea level. From here, you have a stunning 360-degree view of the parade.
  • From above: ADAM Tower (location): Another spot worth visiting is the A’DAM Tower rooftop (on the other side of the IJ). Here you can swing high above the ships or enjoy a drink at the sky bar. Visit the official website to explore the tickets.

– Fun events to check out:

  • Stenenhoofd (location): A free festival-like spot with a small beach, beach chair rentals, drinks, and toilets. Perfect if you want facilities close by. Check their website: Stenenhoofd.
  • Lowlander Botanical Bar & Restaurant (location): Right on the waterfront in Amsterdam Noord, you can find Lowlander. From the terrace, you can easily watch the (parade of) impressive ships. For SAIL, Lowlander is hosting an exceptional front-row experience with live music, great food, and plenty of Lowlander brews.

Best places to see the Sail-in parade in IJmuiden

Here are some of the most scenic and less crowded spots around IJmuiden to watch the Sail-In Parade. For most places a car is required:

  • IJmuiden Locks (location): This is where the magic begins: ships emerge from the North Sea into the locks before sailing toward Amsterdam. A great spot before the locks is Kop van de Haven (location) and a nice spot after the locks is along the Kanaaldijk (location).
  • North Sea Canal Banks: A quieter choice to Amsterdam, the canal banks around IJmuiden offer great views as the ships make their way inland. A peaceful setting and typically less crowded than the city. A great alternative is the Koffiepost (location) or Cafeteria Visser Spaarnwoude (location).

Experience Sail Amsterdam from the shore vs. from the water

Both perspectives are unique, and if you can, I recommend experiencing both land and water during Sail:

– From the shore:

  • Relax with a picnic or drink from the shore.
  • Enjoy the festival vibes, food stalls, and performances.
  • Perfect if you want a slower pace.

– From the water:

  • Board a tour boat or private sloop to sail among the tall ships. Some options are short sightseeing cruises, luxury dinner cruises, party boats or private sloops which you can rent with friends.
  • Experience the ships up close.

Pro tip: Book your boat tour early! Tickets for popular time slots, such as Sail In or sunset cruises, often sell out weeks in advance. Make sure to read the tour descriptions carefully to ensure the tour goes to the IJ and not just the regular canals of Amsterdam.

Where to stay during Sail Amsterdam?

Finding the right accommodation during Sail Amsterdam is essential, not only because the city will be crowded, but also because staying near the IJ means you’ll have quick access to the ships and festivities 😀 . Hotels fill up fast during Sail, so book as early as possible. Here are some great options:

– Budget-friendly choices

  • Botel: Why not stay in a boat-themed hostel?! This unique hostel offers rooms on a boat and is located on the IJ, near the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. Private rooms and dorms available. I think it’s the best place to stay during Sail Amsterdam!
  • ClinkNOORD Hostel: Located on the north side of the IJ, just a short (and free!) ferry ride from Central Station. Social, affordable, and right in the Sail atmosphere. Private rooms and dorms available.
  • Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark: Not on the IJ, but one of the best budget hostels in the city. A good choice if you want a cheaper stay and don’t mind biking or taking public transport to the event.

– Mid-range options

  • Eric Vökel Boutique Suites: My personal favorite viewing spot! These stylish suites and apartments are perfect if you want both comfort and one of the best viewing points for the ships arriving.
  • Room Mate Aitana: Located on an island in the IJ River, this modern hotel is in the middle of the action, with stunning views of the harbor and ships.

– Luxury stays

  • Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam: A must-visit place if you have a higher budget. This hotel is a unique, sustainable hotel, situated on the River IJ at the former location where ships once departed for Jakarta. Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam offers 200 luxury rooms in Indonesian style.
  • Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre: Just steps away from the IJ and Central Train Station and offering panoramic views of the river. Many rooms overlook the ships, so you can enjoy Sail without leaving your hotel.
  • The July – Boat & Co: A 4-star hotel on the waterfront in Amsterdam’s Houthaven district. The hotel features its own restaurant, a fitness room, a wellness area, and a terrace overlooking the IJ.

Tip: if city center hotels are sold out, check nearby towns like Haarlem, Zaandam, or Almere. With trains running often, you can still reach Amsterdam in less than 30 minutes.

What to bring to Sail Amsterdam?

Pack smart for a comfortable day. I recommend to bring:

  • Binoculars
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • (Reusable) water bottle and snacks
  • Camera or smartphone for photos
  • Cash and card
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Picnic blanket or chair if you plan to sit along the shore
  • Light jacket (evenings can get chilly by the water)
  • Umbrella or rain jacket

Other practical tips for visiting Sail Amsterdam

  • Arrive early to claim a good spot, especially for the Sail In.
  • Use public transport. Parking is limited and roads get congested.
  • Bring cash and card. Some festival stalls only accept one or the other.
  • Stay flexible. Crowds can be overwhelming, so plan alternatives.
  • Stay hydrated. August can be warm in Amsterdam.

Conclusion

I believe that Sail Amsterdam 2025 is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! It combines history, culture, and maritime beauty. From watching tall ships sail into the city, to joining a (sunset) cruise surrounded by sails and masts, this event captures the magic of the sea in the heart of Amsterdam.
