A short introduction
Valle de Antón is located about 600 meters above sea level, which means cooler temperatures than the coast 😉 . Expect green mountains, flower-filled gardens, thousands of birds and a peaceful small-town atmosphere.
How to travel to Valle de Antón?
Valle de Antón is easy to reach from many places in Panama. Here are the most common routes:
- From Panama City: The easiest and most direct way is by local bus from the Albrook Bus Terminal. Look for buses heading to San Carlos, Penonomé, or Chitré, and ask the driver to drop you off at the turnoff for Valle de Antón (El Valle). From there, it’s a short taxi or local bus ride into town. Some buses also drive directly through town. The journey typically takes 2-3 hours.
- From Playa Venao: If you’re coming from Playa Venao, take a bus to Las Tablas, then transfer to a bus bound for San Carlos or Panama City. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Valle de Antón junction. Expect this trip to take around 4-5 hours.
- From Santa Catalina: From Santa Catalina, take a bus to Soná, transfer to a bus heading to Santiago, then take a bus to Penonomé or San Carlos. Finally, transfer to a bus to Valle de Antón. This journey can take around 6-7 hours.
- From Boquete: Traveling from Boquete will take some time. First, catch a bus to David, then transfer to a bus to Santiago. From Santiago, head to Penonomé or San Carlos and ask to be dropped off at the Valle de Antón entrance. The total travel time is roughly 7-8 hours.
Tips for getting around
Valle de Antón is small and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. You can also easily rent a scooter or use a taxi.
Tip: join an e-bike tour. I did one myself and it was honestly a highlight of my stay.

How many days do you need in Valle de Antón?
While many visitors come for just a day or two, I’d recommend spending at least 3-4 days to fully enjoy everything. If you love hiking, birdwatching, or simply relaxing in nature, you might end up staying much longer, just like I did for 8 days!
Tip: if you don’t have time for a (longer) stay in Valle de Antón, you can still experience the beauty of the valley on a day trip from Panama City. Consider this highly rated option: a day tour to El Valle with hiking at La India Dormida.
What is the best time to visit El Valle?
The best time to visit Valle de Antón is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is cooler and perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring. The wet season (May to November) is also beautiful, as the valley turns lush and green, but expect some afternoon rain showers.

The best things to do in Valle de Antón
You’ll never be bored here. These are my favorite things to do:
1. Hike to Cerro de la Silla
This lesser-known hike (location) offers a beautiful view of the surrounding valley and mountains. The trail is more rugged compared to La India Dormida, providing a more adventurous experience. At the top, you can find a cross and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the valley. Perfect if you want a quick, but challenging hike.
Take any local bus in the direction of the mountain and ask the driver to stop at Parada de buses el Roble. From there it’s a short walk to the start of the mountain.

2. Hike La India Dormida and/or see the Painted Rock (La Piedra Pintada)
One of the most iconic hikes in Valle de Antón, La India Dormida, offers stunning views of the valley. The trail is moderate, and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the town and surrounding mountains. I hiked La India Dormida, but not in the usual way. I added a twist and took the trail backwards. What followed was a muddy, adventurous, and unforgettable morning filled with slippery rocks, wild monkeys, and incredible views. Read this post to explore the best tips, route options, and what to pack for this epic hike!
At the start, or end of the hike, you can find the Painted Rock (La Piedra Pintada, location). This archaeological site features ancient petroglyphs, or rock carvings, which are believed to date back over a thousand years. The meaning of the carvings remains a mystery, but they provide a nice glimpse into Panama’s ancient cultures.
Tip: start hikes early and enjoy cooler temps and fewer people.

3. Swim in a natural pool at El Chorro Macho Waterfall
El Chorro Macho (location) is a beautiful and easily accessible waterfall. There’s a hanging bridge, short hiking trails, and a natural pool for swimming. This waterfall is the largest in the región with a drop of 70m. It is just a 30 minutes walk from the towncenter in the direction of La Mesa. You can also book a canopy tour at the waterfall.
Tip: bring mosquito repellent to El Valle, especially near this waterfall.
4. Visit a museum
Visit the Centro de Visitantes El Valle (location) or Museo Victoriano Lorenzo (location). The visitor centre is a great place to learn about the history of the Anton Valley, from its origins to its first inhabitants! Interactive displays highlight the valley’s landmarks, allowing you to discover everything it has to offer visitors. The Museo Victoriano Lorenzo enriches your cultural and intellectual experience. The museum is exceptionally well-preserved, and tours with guides are available.
Travel Insurance
Don’t forget travel insurance for your Panama trip. Heymondo or Safetywing are among the cheapest travel insurances for travelers and cover medical emergencies, theft, delays, cancellations, lost luggage, and more. As a reader of Girlswanderlust, you’ll receive a 5% discount on your next Heymondo travel insurance.
5. Hike to Cerro Cara Iguana
Cerro Cara Iguana (location) is another fantastic hike. It’s a relatively short but steep hike. Perfect if you want a quick but challenging hike.
6. Spot some frogs at the frog Sanctuary and hike the Square Trees Nature Trail (Arboles Cuadrados)
Learn about Panama’s endangered golden frog (Rana Dorada). Visiting the frog sanctuary (location) gives you the opportunity to learn about the conservation efforts protecting this species and to see some of these frogs up close. It’s a small and lesser-known sanctuary, so when I visited, I was the only guest and received plenty of detailed explanations from the staff. It was a very nice and educational experience.
After visiting the sanctuary, you can hike the Square Trees Nature Trail (Árboles Cuadrados, location). To be honest, the trees weren’t as square as I expected, but the hike itself turned out to be a nice experience. We crossed a few bridges, spotted plenty of birds, and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. Once again, we were the only visitors on the trail.

7. Visit the Orchids Center (Aprovaca Orquídeas)
The nonprofit organisation APROVACA (Asociación de Productores de Orquídeas El Valle y Cabuya) deicates itself to the task of cultivating and conserving endangered local and regional orchids. At the moment 147 different kinds of orchids can be seen at the center (location).
8. Go birdwatching
Valle de Antón is an amazing place for birdwatchers! You can spot a wide variety of species, for example toucans, hummingbirds, and even the elusive resplendent quetzal. It’s a great destination for both guided birdwatching tours and solo excursions and even while simply walking around town, you’ll already see plenty of beautiful birds.

9. Visit Butterfly Haven
Butterfly Haven (location) is an educational butterfly exhibit where you can see a variety of species native to Panama. The knowledgeable guides explain the butterfly life cycle, and the enclosed garden allows for close-up encounters. I didn’t have the chance to visit this place myself, but I’ve heard it’s a lovely experience.
10. Enjoy the sunset (or views) at the Cerro La Cruz Viewpoint
Cerro La Cruz is a great spot (location) to see the sunset. It’s located directly next to the highway and offers great views of the valley.

11. Explore the El Valle Market
El Valle Market (location) is a nice spot for shopping. You can find local crafts, fresh produce, traditional clothing, and souvenirs. It’s also a great place to try local fruits and snacks.
12. Enjoy a bike tour
As a Dutchie who loves cycling, I couldn’t pass up the chance to explore El Valle de Antón on an e-bike. The terrain in Valle de Antón is mostly flat, making it ideal for cycling. An e-bike tour, which I personally loved, is perfect for covering more ground with less effort! I did an e-bike tour with E-Valley Bikes and can really recommend it. And don’t worry, it’s super easy, even if you’re not a biking pro (like me) 😉 Click on the photo below to see a video of the tour.

Don’t visit Pozos Termales El Valle de Antón and El Nispero Zoo and Botanical Garden
I don’t recommend visiting Pozos Termales El Valle de Antón or the El Nispero Zoo and Botanical Garden. Both places lack proper maintenance and do not meet European standards when it comes to hygiene and animal care.
Budget tip
Traveling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Visa Card or Revolut Maestro Card. I have been using these cards for several years and have saved a lot of money as a result. I recommend bringing both bank cards with you when you travel.
Where to eat in Valle de Antón?
Here are some of my favorite spots for breakfast, lunch and dinner:
- Kare Coffee & Trips (location): Great place in nature for coffee, waffles, empanadas and sweets (all-day brunch).
- Cocolatte El Valle (location): Great place for breakfast and lunch. Try the mix Lebanese dish and cheesecake 😉
- Café Unido El Valle (location): Small place for coffee, breakfast and lunch. Good quality.
- Volcancito’s (location): Usually I don’t eat in the accommodations where I am staying, but this restaurant in the Golden Frog Inn Hotel is really nice. Think tacos, salads, quesadillas, nachos and soups. They have happy hour and live music during some nights.
- Restaurante Brisas Panameñas (location): A great place for traditional Panamanian food at affordable prices. I ate here several nights and can recommend trying their arroz con pollo.
- L’italiano Ristorante (location): An Italian spot serving delicious pizzas and refreshing drinks.
- El Valle Brew Co (location): A nice place to have some drinks in Valle de Antón. It’s a brewery located on the same propterty as the frog Sanctuary and the Trees Nature Trail (Arboles Cuadrados).

My favorite places to stay in Valle de Antón
I had the pleasure of staying in several accommodations in Valle de Antón. I stayed in the Golden Frog Inn Hotel and Nomada Republic Hotel and loved both places! Below you can find an overview of these places and some other recommendations:
- Bodhi Hostel or Casa India Dormida (budget): Bodhi El Valle is a friendly, social and affordable hostel located in the middle of town. Casa India Dormida offer private cabins for affordable prices at the foot of La India Dormida.
- Golden Frog Inn Hotel or Nomada Republic Hotel (mid-range): The Golden Frog Inn boutique hotel has spacious rooms, a lush garden, and an inviting pool area. The staff here are wonderful and the food was delicious. Nomada Republic Hotel offer hotel rooms in container ships. The views are amazing! I’ve stayed multiple nights at these hotels.
- Hotel La Compania Del Valle (luxury): If you’re looking for luxury, this is the place to go. With its charming Spanish-style architecture, spa services, and beautiful surroundings, La Compania Del Valle is the perfect place for relaxation.

Other useful tips
- Carry cash: Many places in Valle de Antón are cash-only, especially local markets, taxis, and smaller restaurants. There are ATMs in town, but it’s smart to have some cash on hand before traveling to the valley.
- Use Wise to save on transaction fees: Paying with a Wise card or withdrawing cash using Wise can help you avoid high international bank and exchange fees.
- Get travel insurance: Valle de Antón is all about outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and waterfalls. Good travel insurance gives peace of mind in case of accidents, injuries, or unexpected travel changes. Heymondo or Safetywing are among the cheapest travel insurances for travelers.
- Buy an eSIM in advance: Mobile coverage in Valle de Antón is generally good, but buying an eSIM before you arrive saves time and ensures you’re connected right away. It’s very handy for navigation, taxis, and checking trail routes. I often use Holafly, Airalo or Saily.
- Bring layers: While it’s warm during the day, evenings can get surprisingly cool due to the valley’s elevation. A light jacket or sweater is definitely worth packing.
- Be prepared for rain: Even during the dry season, sudden rain showers can occur. Bring a lightweight rain jacket or poncho.
- Wear proper hiking shoes: Trails can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners will make your hikes much more comfortable and safe.
- Start activities early: Mornings are cooler and quieter, making them ideal for hiking and wildlife spotting.
- Safety tips: Valle de Antón is generally safe, but as a solo female traveler:
- stick to well-traveled areas and trails, especially at night
- let someone know your plans if you’re hiking alone.
- use rideshare apps instead of hitchhiking.
- and trust your instincts. If something feels off, move to a busier area or back to town.
Tips for staying connected

Traveling abroad and looking to save on roaming costs? Skip the hassle of physical SIM cards and stay connected with an eSIM from providers like Holafly, Airalo or Saily. I’ve been using eSIMs on my trips and find them incredibly convenient and cost-effective.
Don’t forget to use my discount code at Holafly: GIRLSWANDERLUST.
