The Cameron Highlands: everything you need to know
Last Updated on August 15, 2025
One of the biggest highlights when traveling to Malaysia is undoubtedly the stunning Cameron Highlands. In this article, I share everything you need to know for visiting the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. This guide covers everything from how to get there and what to do, to local must-try dishes and tips for accommodation. Enjoy!
A short introduction to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia
The Cameron Highlands are situated in the heart of Malaysia, approximately 150 kilometers from the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur. The area is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, lush greenery, and cool climate. Because the highlands reach an impressive elevation of almost 2,000 meters at their highest point, temperatures here can be significantly lower compared to other parts of Malaysia. These cooler temperatures create an ideal environment for cultivating tea, which has made the region famous for its tea plantations. Today, visitors can explore the vast tea estates, learn about the tea-making process, and enjoy stunning views of the rolling hills covered in tea bushes.

How to travel to the Cameron Highlands?
Depending on how you’re traveling through Malaysia, there are several ways to reach the Cameron Highlands:
– By car:
If you have a rental car, reaching the Cameron Highlands is very straightforward. Just keep in mind that the roads are winding, as you are ascending into the highlands.
From Kuala Lumpur, it takes around a 3-hour drive. The journey is filled with beautiful views, so be sure to take your time and enjoy the scenery along the way.
We drove from Taman Negara towards the Cameron Highlands, which was a longer drive, around 4-hours, but the stunning landscapes made it worthwhile.
– By public transportation:
It’s easy to travel by bus towards the Cameron Highlands. Buses connect major towns like Tanah Rata, Brinchang, and Ringlet. There are many bus companies that operate routes to this popular destination, such as Plusliner and Unititi Express. Buses are a budget-friendly option and they provide a chance to meet fellow travelers along the way.
– Organized (day) trip from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands
If you don’t have much time to spare, you can opt for a day trip from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands. Most day trips include a transfer from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands and a visit to a tea plantation, strawberry farm, cactus farm, honey bee farm and the Lata Iskandar Waterfall. I think it’s a great option to see as much as possible in one day. There are plenty of companies who offer this day trip, but usually the location of the tea plantation is different. Just have a look beforehand at the tea plantation that you would like to visit. Most well-known options are;

Tips for getting around
Getting around in the Cameron Highlands can be an adventure in itself. Here are some tips to help you navigate the area efficiently:
– Rent a Motorcycle or Scooter
If you love adventure, renting a motorcycle or scooter provides a lot of freedom to explore. It’s a great way to navigate narrow roads and find off-the-beaten-path spots. I rented a scooter for multiple days and really enjoyed this 🙂
Tip: make sure to always wear a helmet and to be cautious on the winding roads, especially during rainy weather, as roads can become slippery.
– Rent a car
Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore the Cameron Highlands at your own pace. It allows you to visit remote areas like tea plantations, jungle trails, and farms that may not be easily accessible by public transport.
Roads in the Cameron Highlands are winding and narrow, so drive cautiously, especially around sharp bends. Be prepared for slower speeds and potential traffic during peak tourist seasons or weekends.
– Use local buses
If you’re on a budget, local buses are an affordable way to get around. Buses connect most tourist attractions. The schedules can be infrequent, so it’s important to check the times in advance. You may need to wait for a while, especially for buses heading to more remote areas.
– Hire a taxi or use grab
Taxis and Grab (a popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia) are available in the Cameron Highlands, particularly in towns like Tanah Rata and Brinchang. This is a convenient option if you prefer not to drive or if you’re visiting places not covered by buses.
– Join organized tours
Joining a guided tour is an excellent way to see the highlights of the Cameron Highlands without worrying about transportation. Tours often include transportation, guides, and entry fees, making it a hassle-free option. Many tours cater to different interests, such as nature walks and a visit to the Mossy Forest, tea plantation visits, cultural experiences or a combination of it all. You can book these tours online, at your hotel, or at travel agencies in Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

Best time to visit the Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands has a temperate climate year-round due to its elevation. However, it can be quite misty and rainy, especially from May to October, which is the monsoon season. Therefore, if you prefer drier conditions, visiting from November to April is ideal.
The best things to do in the Cameron Highlands
Although the Cameron Highlands are well-known for its tea plantations, there is much more to see and do. There are lots of hiking possibilities, strawberry farms, butterfly farms and you can pay a visit to the original inhabitants, the Orang Asli. Here are some of the best things to do in the Cameron Highlands:
– Witness the tea production at the Sungai Pala BOH tea plantation
The Sungai Palas BOH Tea Plantation (official website) is one of the most famous and picturesque tea plantations in Malaysia. Set amidst rolling hills covered with lush tea bushes, the plantation offers stunning views that are beautiful to see.
At the plantation, you will find a visitor center and a café where you can enjoy freshly brewed tea. Moreover, guided tours are available, taking you through the tea fields and the factory. During these tours, you can witness the tea production process firsthand, from plucking to packaging. Additionally, there is a shop where you can purchase tea directly from the plantation, allowing you to take a piece of the Cameron Highlands home with you.

– Visit Lavender Gardens
The garden (location) is a vibrant space filled with lavender, other flowers, and numerous photo opportunities. Additionally, it features a small café that serves lavender-themed treats, enhancing the overall experience. For those interested in exploring further, the garden offers several easy hiking trails. One such trail is Trail Two, which is relatively easy and provides a pleasant walk among the lavender fields and other floral displays. Consequently, it is ideal for a leisurely hike while also allowing visitors to enjoy the garden’s beauty.
– Walk through the tea gardens at the Bharat Tea Plantation
The Bharat Tea Plantation (location) is a well-known tea estate that is part of the Cameron Valley Tea brand. Nestled amidst the lush, rolling hills, it offers beautiful views of the surrounding tea fields. Conveniently located along the main road between Tanah Rata and Ringlet, the plantation is easily accessible, making it a convenient stop for visitors.
The Bharat Tea Plantation features several tea houses situated at strategic points within the estate, each offering stunning views of the tea fields. Additionally, there is a shop on-site. While the plantation does not offer an extensive factory tour, it does provide informational displays that explain tea-growing and processing techniques. Thus, you can learn about the journey of tea from the field to your cup. Moreover, the plantation allows visitors to take a self-guided walk through the tea fields, enhancing the overall experience.
– Discover waterfalls in the Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands is home to several beautiful waterfalls:
- Robinson Falls: one of the most accessible and popular waterfalls in the Cameron Highlands. Situated near the town of Tanah Rata, it is easily reached via a short hike from the main road (location). The trail winds through a jungle path surrounded by dense vegetation, and the waterfall itself is relatively tall.
- Parit Falls: a more developed compared to some other waterfalls in the region. With picnic areas, benches, and walking paths, it is also located near Tanah Rata (location). Although the waterfall is smaller and less dramatic, it still offers a pleasant spot for a quick escape into nature. This location is particularly ideal for families and those seeking a short, accessible hike.
- Lata Iskandar: a stunning multi-tiered waterfall, with water cascading down several levels of rocky outcrops. Although technically located just outside the Cameron Highlands, along the road from Tapah to the highlands, Lata Iskandar is one of the most famous waterfalls in the region (location). It is easily accessible, as it is situated right by the roadside. Additionally, there are souvenir stalls and food vendors nearby, and the area around the waterfall is known for its natural pools, which are perfect for a refreshing dip.
Tip: the waterfalls are best visited in the early mornings and during the rainy season (usually from November to February) when the water flow is more substantial. However, the trails can be slippery, so proper footwear is recommended.

Heymondo is one of the cheapest travel insurances for backpackers and covers medical emergencies, theft, delays, cancellations, lost luggage, and more. – Tour a bee farm
The bee farms in the Cameron Highlands are popular attractions that offer insight into beekeeping and honey production. Some popular bee farms are:
- Ee Feng Gu Honey Bee Farm: one of the most well-known bee farms in the region, offering guided tours, honey tasting, and a large garden with various flowers. It’s located near Brinchang and is easily accessible (location).
- Cameron Tringkap Bee Farm: Another popular farm known for its educational tours and extensive honey products. It’s located near the Tringkap area and offers a serene environment (location).
– Hike to Mount Brinchang
Mount Brinchang is one of the highest peaks in the Cameron Highlands, standing at 2,031 meters (6,663 feet). To reach the summit, you have the option of either driving or hiking (location). The most popular route for hikers is via Trail 1, which begins near Brinchang town. This trail is moderately challenging, with steep sections that require a certain level of physical endurance. Along the way, it passes through the Mossy Forest and stretches for approximately 4-5 kilometers. Since the trail can be steep and muddy, wearing good hiking boots is essential.
Reaching the summit of Mount Brinchang is a rewarding experience, as it offers panoramic views of the surrounding highlands, tea plantations, and rolling hills. On clear days, you can see as far as the Titiwangsa Mountain Range. Additionally, the summit features a telecommunications tower, a notable landmark of the peak.
Tip: bring proper hiking boots with good grip, as the trail can be muddy and slippery. It’s also recommended to carry sufficient water, snacks, and insect repellent, as well as a rain jacket.
– Visit the Cameron Highlands Butterfly Garden
The Cameron Highlands Butterfly Garden is a large, netted enclosure teeming with a variety of butterfly species (location). Upon entering, you can observe butterflies fluttering freely among the lush plants and vibrant flowers. Notably, the garden is home to several species of butterflies, including some that are native to the highlands. Among these, the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing stands out as one of the most remarkable, with its striking black and electric green wings.
Moreover, the garden is not just about butterflies; it also houses a diverse collection of other insects and reptiles. Visitors can explore displays featuring beetles, stick insects, scorpions, and spiders. Additionally, the garden includes enclosures with various reptiles, such as lizards, tortoises, and snakes.
Furthermore, informative signs and displays are scattered throughout the garden, offering valuable insights into the life cycle of butterflies, their ecological importance, and the different species found within the garden.
– Go birdwatching
The Cameron Highlands is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 260 species of birds recorded. Guided birdwatching tours are available or you can explore the trails on your own.
– Stroll through the Mossy Forest
The Mossy Forest is a mystical and unique cloud forest located near the peak of Mount Brinchang (location). When the weather is cloudy, the mountain becomes partially shrouded in mist, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere. A boardwalk winds through the forest, allowing you to explore its fascinating flora, including moss-covered trees and rare orchids. Additionally, the forest is an excellent spot for birdwatching.
However, reaching the Mossy Forest is not without its challenges. The road to the top is very steep and filled with numerous curves. While riding a scooter uphill might be manageable, the descent is more difficult due to the constant need to brake, which can cause the brake pads to overheat. It almost happened to me. As a result, most scooter rental companies prohibit driving up this mountain. Therefore, it is advisable to make the journey by car, taxi, or public transportation instead.

– Pick your own strawberries
In addition to the tea plantations, the Cameron Highlands is also home to several strawberry farms where visitors can pick their own strawberries. These strawberries are renowned for their sweetness and freshness, making them a delightful treat. Typically, these farms also feature restaurants where you can enjoy a variety of strawberry-themed dishes.
To be honest, I didn’t find the experience particularly unique, perhaps because greenhouses with strawberries are quite common in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable to take a quick look around and appreciate the fresh air while picking strawberries. If you’re interested, here are some recommended farms:
- Big Red Strawberry Farm: one of the most popular strawberry farms, you can pick your own strawberries, enjoy strawberry-based treats, and explore the hydroponic farm (location).
- Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm: known for its fresh strawberries and homemade products like strawberry jam and ice cream (location).
– Visit the Orang Asli Villages
The Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Malaysia, live in and around the Cameron Highlands. Visiting an Orang Asli village offers a unique opportunity to observe and learn about the daily lives of these indigenous communities. You may see traditional wooden houses, often built on stilts, and gain insight into how the community relies on agriculture, hunting, and gathering for their livelihood. Furthermore, depending on the village you visit, you might have the chance to witness traditional performances, sample local foods, or learn about their spiritual beliefs and rituals.
Tip: always approach with respect and sensitivity to local customs and traditions. Please ask for permission before taking photos and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Budget Tip
Traveling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Visa Card or Revolut Maestro Card. I have been using these cards for several years and have saved a lot of money as a result. I recommend bringing both bank cards with you when you travel.
– Go hiking
The Cameron Highlands offers a range of hiking trails. I already mentioned some hiking trails in the activities above. Here are some other trails you can explore:
- Trail 4 – Trail to Gunung Jasar: this trail offers a relatively easy hike with rewarding views of the highlands from the summit of Gunung Jasar. It’s approximately 5-6 km and passes through a variety of terrains, including forested areas and open ridges. The trail beings from the village of Kampung Taman Sedia. It’s a good option for those looking for a less crowded hike.
- Trail 6 – Trail to Gunung Irau: this is a more demanding hike that takes you to the summit of Gunung Irau. It’s approximately 8 km (round trip) and offers stunning views and an opportunity to experience the highland’s diverse flora. The trail begins from the Pahang-Perak border.
- Trail 7 – Trail 8 (Taman Sedia): this 4 km trail offers a nice hike through various terrains, including forested areas and open fields. Starts from the Taman Sedia area, with well-marked paths.
- Trail 8 – Trail 3 (Blue Valley): this 3-4 km trail offers nice views of the Blue Valley and passes through tea plantations and forested areas. It’s a shorter hike with lovely views.
Tip: I experienced that some trails are not well-marked, so I recommend to bring a map or a GPS device and to tell your accommodation about the trail you’re planning to hike. Bring enough water and wear hiking shoes.

– Try the local cuisine
One of my favorite activities when traveling is trying the local cuisine 🙂 After a day of exploring the Cameron Highlands, be sure to take some time to relax and enjoy the local cuisine. Here are some traditional foods you can enjoy in the Cameron Highlands:
- Jungle Produce (Ulam and Pucuk Paku): traditional Orang Asli cuisine includes jungle produce such as ulam (a type of raw, leafy herb salad) and pucuk paku (fiddlehead fern). These dishes are often served with rice and sambal or used as ingredients in other local dishes.
- Sweet Corn: the Cameron Highlands is known for its sweet corn, which is grown locally and often sold at roadside stalls. It’s usually boiled or grilled and served as a snack.
- Charcoal-Grilled Sweet Potatoes: another popular street food in the Cameron Highlands is charcoal-grilled sweet potatoes. These are often sold by vendors along the roadsides, particularly in the evening. The sweet potatoes are served hot and have a delicious, smoky flavor, making them a great snack 🙂
- Steamboat (Hot Pot): also known as hot pot. This is one of the most popular dishes in the Cameron Highlands, especially due to the cool weather. It involves cooking a variety of ingredients in a pot of simmering broth right at the table. Common ingredients include thinly sliced meats, fresh vegetables, tofu, seafood, and noodles.
- Strawberry-Based Dishes: the Cameron Highlands is famous for its strawberry farms, and strawberries feature prominently in many local dishes. You can find everything from fresh strawberries with cream to strawberry jams, desserts, and even strawberry-inspired dishes like strawberry nasi lemak (a twist on the traditional rice dish).
- Tea-Infused Dishes: given the region’s rich tea heritage, some local eateries offer dishes and desserts infused with tea. Examples include tea-flavored ice cream, tea-smoked chicken, and desserts like tea-infused cakes and pastries.
- Cameron Highlands Scones: scones are a popular treat in the Cameron Highlands, reflecting the region’s British colonial history. They are typically served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, often made with fresh local strawberries.
- Nasi Lemak: a traditional Malaysian dish. It consists of coconut milk rice served with sambal (spicy chili paste), fried anchovies, boiled eggs, peanuts, and cucumbers. In the highlands, it may be accompanied by fresh vegetables or even locally raised chicken. Love it!
– Visit a local market
Local markets in towns like Brinchang and Tanah Rata offer a variety of fresh produce, street food, and traditional snacks that give you a taste of local life and cuisine:
- Brinchang Night Market: held on weekends and during Malaysian school holidays, this market is a great place to sample local street food, buy fresh produce, and shop for souvenirs (location).
- Kea Farm Market: a bustling morning market where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and local delicacies or a nice evening market where you can try some local food.

Other useful tips for visiting the Cameron Highlands
Here are a few additional tips and insights:
- Currency: the local currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Although some places accept major foreign currencies such as USD or EUR, it is advisable to use MYR for local transactions. Additionally, ATMs are available in towns like Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Therefore, it is a good idea to check with your bank about international withdrawal fees before you travel.
- Weather conditions: the weather in the highlands can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers being common. Consequently, it is important to always carry a rain jacket or poncho. Furthermore, rain can make trails slippery, so proper footwear with a good grip is essential. Additionally, bring layers of clothing, including a light jacket and long trousers or a sweater, as temperatures can drop significantly, particularly in the evenings.
- Sustainable Travel: to help preserve the flora en fauna in the Cameron Highlands, please follow the “Leave No Trace” principles: avoid littering, stick to marked trails, and respect wildlife. Consider supporting eco-friendly businesses and practices during your visit.
- Connectivity: Cellcom generally offers good coverage throughout Malaysia. Moreover, you can purchase a SIM card at almost any shop you visit. Alternatively, if you prefer convenience, you might consider buying an eSIM in advance. By doing so, you’ll ensure a seamless connection as soon as you arrive.
Tips for Staying Connected

Traveling abroad and looking to save on roaming costs? Skip the hassle of physical SIM cards and stay connected with an eSIM from providers like Holafly, Airalo or Saily. I’ve been using eSIMs on my trips and find them incredibly convenient and cost-effective.

Best places to stay in the Cameron Highlands
Consider staying in Tanah Rata if you prefer easy access to restaurants, shops, and transportation. Brinchang is another option, closer to attractions like tea plantations and the Mossy Forest. For a more secluded and tranquil stay, consider lodgings in Ringlet or near the tea plantations. Below I provide some more information and accommodation options for every budget:

While the town may not be the most picturesque, it functions as a great launching point for visiting the tea plantations, and several accommodations are available. Additionally, on weekends, you can experience a lively night market in the town center, where you can purchase local products and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
