Tips for traveling to Münster

Münster is an easily accessible city in North Rhine-Westphalia. I traveled from the Netherlands, taking advantage of the convenient train connection from Arnhem. I arrived at Münster Hauptbahnhof (location), the city’s main train station, which is just a short walk from the city center. Traveling by train was not only eco-friendly but also hassle-free, with regular connections from major cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg.

Münster is compact and ideal for exploring on foot or by bike. I explored everything on foot. If you’re driving, parking near the Christmas markets can be tricky, especially during peak times. A convenient option is Parkhaus Stubengasse (location) or Parkhaus Bahnhofstraße (location), two centrally located parking garages just a stone’s throw from the markets.

Pro tip: pack a warm coat, comfy boots, and gloves. Münster’s Christmas markets are best enjoyed bundled up.

Day 1: arrival and first Christmas market visit

After checking into my accommodation, I set out to explore the famous Münster Germany Christmas markets.

My first stop was the Christmas market at Rathausinnenhof (location), set in a charming courtyard near the Town Hall (location). This market is one of the most iconic in Münster. It features around 120 stalls. These stalls offer handcrafted ornaments, wool scarves, and delicious local treats.

From there, I strolled to the Prinzipalmarkt (location), a square lined with illuminated gabled houses. The atmosphere here was magical. Shop windows were decked out in holiday displays. Strings of lights hung overhead.

As the sky darkened, I wandered to the Christmas market at Kiepenkerl Square (location), located in the heart of the old town. This market had a wonderfully cozy vibe, with traditional stalls offering wooden toys, candles, and other festive decorations. The scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filled the air, adding to the warm ambiance.

For dinner, I kept it simple and classic with fries and a currywurst from one of the nearby food stands. Alongside the crispy fries and sausage with curry sauce, I also enjoyed gebäckener Camembert mit Preiselbeeren (baked Camembert with lingonberries) and in Bierteig gebackener Blumenkohl mit Knoblauch (beer-battered cauliflower with garlic). The combination of the rich cheese, crispy cauliflower, and comforting fries was the perfect way to end a chilly evening.

Day 2: Christmas market marathon, cheese & wine, and cinema

My day started at the Überwasserkirche Christmas Market (location), a smaller and quieter market nestled near the beautiful Überwasserkirche church (location). This market is perfect if you’re looking for unique, handcrafted items like wooden toys, ornaments, and scarves. It’s less crowded, offering a peaceful shopping experience.

After visiting the market and church, I made my way towards Olive & Meer (location) for a well-deserved lunch break 🙂 On my walk, I passed the stunning St. Lamberti Church (location), a beautiful gothic landmark. At Olive & Meer I enjoyed a delicious cheese and wine tasting. The shop offers a wide selection of artisanal cheeses paired with exquisite wines, making it the perfect midday treat.

Later in the day, I visited Cinema & Kurbelkiste (location), a charming indie cinema that shows a mix of international and local films. As you might know, it’s one of my traditions to visit a cinema when traveling abroad, so of course, I couldn’t skip the chance to visit one in Germany. Anyway, there is a cute café inside the cinema, where I first played some board games, had a few drinks, and enjoyed dinner. After dinner, I watched an arthouse movie.

Day 3: botanical gardens, palaces, art, and more markets

I started my day with a visit to the Botanical Garden of the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Münster (location), a nice escape from the Christmas Markets, especially in winter (or on rainy days). The admission is free and there are plenty of gardens and green houses to be explored. Visit the official website for more information.

Just a short walk away, I also explored Schloss Münster (location), an impressive palace surrounded by beautiful gardens.

For lunch, I couldn’t resist the delicious Flammkuchen at Le Feu – Der Flammkuchen. The restaurant offers all-you-can-eat Flammkuchen, but I opted for just one type because it was only for lunch. Flammkuchen is a thin, crispy flatbread topped with a variety of ingredients, like crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. It’s one of my favorite dishes in Germany!

In the afternoon, I joined a ceramic painting workshop at Keramikmalerei von artcuisine (official website), a lovely studio where you can paint your own ceramics. The process was both relaxing and fun. I painted a Christmas-themed plate as a keepsake of my time in Münster. This was a wonderful way to create a personalized souvenir. The friendly staff guided me through every step of the process. If you enjoy crafting, this is a must-do activity! 🙂

For dinner, I enjoyed Wiener Schnitzel mit Kartoffeln (breaded veal schnitzel with potatoes), a classic German dish, along with a refreshing local beer. The schnitzel was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, making it a hearty and satisfying meal. Afterward, I returned to the Münster Germany Christmas Markets to revisit my favorite stalls. It was the perfect opportunity to pick up some last-minute gifts. I also savored a final mug of hot fruit juice.
