Pokhara, Nepal is a must-visit place! Picture this: you wake up to the majestic Annapurnas, sip coffee by a beautiful lake, then jump into thrilling activities like paragliding or hiking to the World Peace Pagoda. Pokhara is where tranquility meets thrill, with cozy shisha lounges, charming pizzerias, lakeside cafes, pool bars, and mouthwatering German bakeries lining the streets. It’s the kind of place that gives you those “I never want to leave” vibes. After the chaos of Kathmandu, Pokhara felt like a breath of fresh air to me. I’m sure you will find it so relaxing that you’ll find it almost impossible to leave. Ready to soak it all in? Let’s explore!

Short info about Pokhara, Nepal

Pokhara is Nepal’s second-largest city. Encircled by the Annapurna mountain range and centered around Phewa Lake, it’s a favorite place among hippies, trekkers, backpackers, and locals alike. From paragliding over the lake to enjoying the spiritual calm of Buddhist stupas, I think that Pokhara is a great destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

How to travel to Pokhara?

Getting to Pokhara is half the adventure! Here are some options:

– From Kathmandu

  • By Road: Take an eight to sixteen-hour bus ride. Tourist buses are comfortable and offer scenic views of Nepal’s countryside, rivers, and charming villages. I enjoyed taking the bus 😀
  • By Air: Hop on a 30-40 minute flight. You’ll be treated to spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas. Flights are pricier, but worth the saved time.

– From Chitwan

  • By Bus: The drive takes about six to eight hours. Tourist buses are reliable and comfortable. I took the bus from Pokhara to Chitwan and really enjoyed it 🙂
  • Private Vehicle: If you prefer flexibility, hire a private car for a more convenient and faster journey.

Best time to visit Pokhara

The best time to visit Pokhara, Nepal, is October to April when the weather is nice and the skies are clear. If you want the ultimate experience, October and November are perfect for stunning mountain views and lush, post-monsoon landscapes. Spring (March and April) is another great option, with warm days, cool evenings, and blooming rhododendrons. Avoid the monsoon season (June to September) unless you’re okay with rain, muddy trails, and hidden mountain views. Winter (December to February) is sunny during the day but chilly at night, great for lower treks but snowy at higher altitudes.

How to get around in Pokhara?

Getting around Pokhara is easy and fun, whether you prefer exploring on foot, cycling around, or hopping into a taxi. Here’s a quick overview to help you navigate Pokhara effortlessly:

  • Walking: The Lakeside area is walkable, with shops, cafes, and attractions just a stroll away.
  • Bicycles & Scooters: Rent a bike or scooter for about NPR 500-1,000 (€4-8) per day.
  • Taxis: Taxis are convenient and widely available. Ride-hailing services are also available in Pokhara. Download inDrive and/or Pathao to explore the different options 😉

Tips for staying connected

Traveling abroad and looking to save on roaming costs? Skip the hassle of physical SIM cards and stay connected with an eSIM from providers like Holafly, Airalo or Saily. I’ve been using eSIMs on my trips and find them incredibly convenient and cost-effective.

Top 15 things to do in Pokhara

Pokhara offers endless adventures! You can go rafting, mountain biking, paragliding, paddling on the lake, or even try ultra-light flying or bungee jumping. Don’t forget to hike up to the World Peace Pagoda or visit the breathtaking Devi’s Waterfall and one of the many magnificent caves. Below, you’ll find more detailed information about these attractions and activities to help you plan your perfect trip to Pokhara!

One of my favorite days in Pokhara was when I rented a boat and paddled across Fewa Lake to its far side. From there, I embarked on a one-hour hike up to the World Peace Pagoda. The views from the top were absolutely stunning. You could see all of Pokhara and even the majestic Himalayas surrounding the city (only on clear days). After visiting the Pagoda, I descended the hill on the other side and explored the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, Davis Falls, and the fascinating Robotic Buddha Museum. Each spot added its own unique charm to the day.

1. Witness the sunrise at Sarangkot

Set your alarm early and head to Sarangkot to witness the sun rising over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The golden light spilling over the mountains is a sight you’ll never forget. There are different view points on Sarangkot, some popular ones:

Tip: Sarangkot is also a popular take-off spot for paragliding, so you can follow up the sunrise with a flight over Pokhara. Consider booking a Sarangkot sunrise tour.

2. Watch the sunset at Phewa Lake and paddle around

The heart of Pokhara, Phewa Lake, is the perfect spot to relax. Rent a boat from one of the many lakeside stands (don’t forget to haggle for the best price! 😉 ). For a unique experience, head to the small island housing the Tal Barahi Temple (location), a sacred Hindu shrine. A seven-person boat costs around 1700 Rupees (€14.00) for two hours. My favorite memory here? Watching the sunset as the lake mirrored the golden glow of the sky. This is pure magic!

3. Soar like a bird over Pokhara

If you’ve ever dreamed of flying like a bird, an ultra-light flight in Pokhara is the way to do it! Imagine taking off from a small airstrip, feeling the wind rush past as you glide high above Phewa Lake, with the Annapurna Range stretching endlessly before you. The tiny aircraft, with its open cockpit, makes the whole experience even more thrilling. You’re not just a passenger; you feel like part of the sky! With most operators, you can choose between a 15-minute, 30-minute, 60-minute, or even a 90-minute flight.

Tip: go for a morning flight when the air is calm, and the views are at their best. And don’t forget to smile! Your pilot might snap a mid-air selfie with you!

4. Try the the world’s steepest zip-line

If roller coasters feel too tame for you, Pokhara’s ZipFlyer is your kind of adventure. This isn’t just any zipline. It’s one of the world’s steepest and fastest, launching you off a hilltop at Sarangkot and sending you hurtling down 600 meters at speeds up to 120 km/h. The best part? Unlike a roller coaster, there are no tracks or rails. It’s just you, the wind, and pure gravity.

Tip: try to keep your eyes open (at least for a few seconds) because the views are epic!

5. Go paragliding in Pokhara

Feel the wind in your hair as you soar over Pokhara’s stunning landscapes. I did tandem paragliding during my visit, and it was an experience of a lifetime! Sitting in a harness while my pilot handled the controls, I snapped incredible photos of the Himalayas and Phewa Lake.

Tip: don’t miss the chance to buy a video of your flight. It’s totally worth the extra Rupees.

6. Jump, scream, repeat: bungee in Pokhara!

Ever wondered what it feels like to step off the edge and just… fall? Well, here’s your chance! Pokhara’s bungee jump drops you 70 meters straight down, and let’s be real, those first few seconds are pure, heart-pounding terror. But then? The biggest adrenaline rush of your life! One moment, you’re free-falling, the next, you’re bouncing back up, probably laughing, screaming, or both. And the best part? That “I DID IT!” feeling when you’re back on solid ground.

Tip: don’t overthink it. Just jump! The longer you wait, the scarier it gets. And trust me, you’ll want to do it again!

7. See a movie at the Movie Garden

Looking for a laid-back evening? Head to the Movie Garden (location), a hidden gem offering open-air cinema experiences with a view of Fewa Lake. Snuggle up on beanbags, enjoy wood-fired pizzas, and watch a film under the stars. Ticket prices vary from 200 to 400 Rupees (€1.65–€3.30), and pizzas range from 230 to 500 Rupees (€1.90–€4.10). It’s cozy, delicious, and oh-so-relaxing. If you’re lucky, you can even see fireflies flying around the screen.

Tip: if you want to get a good seat, it’s recommended to arrive early.

8. Hike up the World Peace Pagoda

The World Peace Pagoda in Pokhara, Nepal (location), is a beautiful white stupa sitting high on Ananda Hill, where you’ll be treated to amazing views of the Annapurna mountains, Phewa Lake, and the valley below. Built by a Japanese monk as a symbol of peace, it has four golden Buddha statues, each showing a key moment in Buddha’s life. Getting there is part of the adventure! You can take a boat across Phewa Lake and trek for about 30-40 minutes, or even take a taxi directly from town. You can walk clockwise around its top level.

Tip: remove shoes and dress modestly when visiting the pagoda. Visit on a clear day to see the snow-capped peaks in all their glory.

9. Visit the International Mountain Museum

Dive into Nepal’s mountaineering history at this museum (location), which showcases the culture of mountain communities and the grandeur of the Himalayas. It’s an educational and inspiring stop, especially for trekking enthusiasts. The entrance fee is 750 Rupees for foreigners. Visit the official website of the museum for more information.

10. Ride through Pokhara’s epic trails

If you love cycling and adventure, mountain biking in Pokhara is the perfect way to explore beyond the usual tourist spots. Picture this: pedaling along forest trails, bumpy dirt roads, and scenic ridges, with the Annapurna Range towering in the background. The best part? You can make it as easy or challenging as you want!

Tip: start early in the morning for cooler weather and fewer crowds, and don’t forget to stop for a tea break at a local shop. You’ll earn it!

11. Visit the Davis Falls

Also known as Patale Chhango (location), this waterfall is unique for its mysterious plunge into an underground tunnel. While it’s most impressive during the monsoon season (June to September), I think it’s worth a quick stop year-round. The story behind its name is tragic yet fascinating. A Swiss woman, Mrs. Davis, was swept away here in 1961. The entrance is a mere 30 Rupees (€0.25), so it’s easy on the wallet.

12. Explore the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

Right across from Davis Falls lies the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave (location), Nepal’s most famous cave. The building itself is beautiful, and the cave was interesting. Unfortunately, taking photos is not allowed, as it is considered a sacred place. Stretching 2950 meters, it’s a dark place to explore. Bring a flashlight or head torch since the interior lighting is dim. Inside, you’ll find sacred shrines and natural wonders. The entrance fee for foreigners is only 100 Rupees (€0.83).

Tip: it’s best to visit when there are fewer people, as the corridors are quite narrow. If you’re claustrophobic, this might not be the ideal place for you.

13. Hike the Annapurna Circuit

Hiking the Annapurna Circuit is a bucket-list adventure and one of the best things to do starting from Pokhara. This trek takes you through diverse landscapes, from forests and terraced fields to snowy mountain passes. Along the way, you’ll pass some villages, monasteries, and viewpoints like the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). This pass (location) is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit. Pokhara is the perfect base to gear up for the trek, offering equipment rentals, cozy lodges, and scenic rest stops to prepare you for this unforgettable journey through the Himalayas. You can choose from all kinds of tours like; 4D3N Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek or a 7D6N Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Tip: If you’re looking for another incredible trek in Nepal, consider the Langtang and Gosainkunda trek. I hiked this route, which also offers stunning alpine scenery and cultural encounters with local communities.

14. Cook like a local in Pokhara

Whenever I travel abroad, I always take a cooking class or food tour. I think it’s the best way to dive into a country’s culture (and eat amazing food!). In Pokhara, I found the perfect experience, where you get to chop, stir, and spice up traditional Nepali dishes alongside a local chef. From making momos (steamed dumplings) to perfecting a plate of dal bhat (lentil curry with rice), it’s hands-on, fun, and delicious! The best part? Sitting down at the end and eat 😉

Tip: come hungry. You’ll be eating a lot!

15. Take a day trip to the Begnas Lake

If you have enough time in Pokhara and visited all the above mentioned attractions, you can also visit Begnas Lake, just a short drive from Pokhara (location). It’s less crowded than Phewa Lake, making it ideal for fishing, boating, or simply enjoying nature. Pack a picnic, rent a boat, and soak in the serene vibes. Begnas Lake is the third-largest lake in Nepal and spans around 3.28 square kilometers.
