Long-haul flights have a reputation and not a great one. Hours stuck in a cramped seat, dry cabin air, questionable meals, and the constant hum of the engines… not exactly the highlight of your trip, right? But here’s the good news: with the right preparation, a long-haul flight doesn’t have to feel like endurance training. In fact, it can be comfortable, productive, and even enjoyable. Yes, really!

In this guide, I’m sharing 40 essential long-haul flight tips covering comfort, food & drinks, entertainment, health, and smart packing, so you’ll arrive at your destination feeling refreshed instead of wrecked. Let’s turn that flight into part of the adventure️. Enjoy!

Long-haul flight tips for maximum comfort

Being comfortable at 35,000 feet is all about smart choices and a little preparation. These long-haul flight tips will help you sleep better, feel fresher, and stay relaxed during even the longest journeys:

  1. Dress comfortably (and layer up): Cabin temperatures are unpredictable. I recommend to wear loose, breathable clothing and bring layers so you can adjust easily.
  2. Bring your own neck pillow: Airline pillows are hit or miss. A supportive neck pillow can seriously improve your in-flight sleep.
  3. Pack noise-canceling headphones or earplugs: Crying babies, engine noise, chatty neighbors blocked. Total game changer 😉
  4. Use antibacterial wipes: Wipe down your tray table, armrests, screen, and seatbelt. Planes aren’t exactly known for deep cleaning.
  5. Bring an eye mask: Perfect for sleeping when cabin lights are on or flying during daylight hours.

  1. Use the airline blanket (or bring your own): Cabins can get cold fast. Staying warm makes it much easier to fall asleep.
  2. Keep your seatbelt visible while sleeping: This prevents flight attendants from waking you during turbulence checks.
  3. Freshen up mid-flight: A mini toiletry kit with a toothbrush, face mist, deodorant, and lip balm makes a huge difference.
  4. Choose a window seat if you want sleep: It’s easier to lean against, and you won’t need to get up for bathroom breaks.
  5. Avoid seats near toilets or galleys: Noise, smells, and constant foot traffic = guaranteed sleep disruption.
  6. Sit away from baby bassinets: Families with infants are often seated near bulkheads. Move back if you want peace and quiet.
  7. Choose a good airline: A comfy flight starts with a quality airline. Check reviews for legroom, food, and entertainment before booking. Curious what it’s like to fly in style? Check out this Turkish Airlines Business Class experience!

What to eat & drink on a long-haul flight

Let’s be real. Airplane food isn’t exactly Michelin-starred. But with a few clever choices and a little planning, you can stay full, hydrated, and happy all the way to your destination. Here are 7 tasty tips to make eating and drinking at 35,000 feet a breeze:

  1. Pack your favorite snacks: Don’t rely solely on the airline meals. They can be small or served at weird hours. Pack your go-to snacks like nuts, granola bars, or dried fruit to keep hunger (and hanger) at bay.
  2. Stay hydrated like a pro: Cabin air is drier than the Sahara. Drink water regularly throughout the flight and skip the sugary sodas that make you feel more thirsty.
  3. Bring an empty bottle: Security won’t let you take water through, but you can bring an empty bottle and fill it up at the airport or ask flight attendants to refill it during the flight. Bonus: it saves plastic! Explore more easy tips on saving plastic while traveling! 🙂
  4. Enjoy the free drinks (but pace yourself!): Yes, that wine is complimentary. Yes, you’re on vacation. But alcohol dehydrates you fast at altitude, so alternate with water and don’t go overboard unless you want to arrive groggy.
  5. Limit caffeine (unless you’re landing soon): Tempting as it is, caffeine can mess with your sleep and dry you out. Save your latte for after landing, your future jetlagged self will thank you 😉
  6. Choose lighter meal options: If there’s a choice between pasta and a heavy curry, go with something lighter and less greasy. It’s easier on your stomach in a pressurized cabin.
  7. Don’t be shy, ask for extras politely: Need another bread roll, juice, or snack? Ask! Flight attendants often have extra items in the galley, especially on longer flights.
  8. Eat according to your destination time: This helps your body adjust faster and reduces jet lag.

Carry-on essentials for long-haul flights

Smart packing is one of the most underrated long-haul flight tips. I really believe that long travel days are way easier when you pack smart. Here’s some inspiration:

  1. Use compression packing cubes: They keep your bag organized and save space.
  2. Pack a well-designed carry-on backpack: I usually travel with hand luggage only. A well-designed backpack can easily handle long trips. Yes, even multi-week adventures. My go-to is the 45L Peak Design Travel Backpack. I also never leave without my North Face daypack. It has a laptop sleeve and is perfect for keeping my passport, electronics, and travel documents close while flying.
  3. Carry TSA-approved locks: Extra peace of mind for zippers on the plane and in hostels.
  4. Pack a power bank: Not all seats have working USB ports.

Budget tip

Traveling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Visa Card or Revolut Maestro Card. I have been using these cards for several years and have saved a lot of money as a result. I recommend bringing both bank cards with you when you travel.

Other useful tips for surviving long-haul flights

  1. Download everything offline: Movies, maps, boarding passes, and language apps. Just in case 😉
  2. Keep essentials within reach: Avoid standing up constantly by packing smartly.
  3. Switch your watch to destination time: It’s a small mental trick that helps reduce jet lag.

I’m glad you talked about choosing to sit next to a window. I have a really long flight coming up and I didn’t know how to stay comfortable. I can see how having a widow would keep you more entertained.

    1. Girlswanderlust

Yes, and it will also provide the opportunity to take a nap in a comfortable position against the wall and you do not have to get up when your neighbors go to the bathroom! Definitely go for a window seat! =)

The worst thing for me is always food 😛 As I am vegetarian, I usually get some really suspicious things like the last time for breakfast I got peach form can and smashed potato! 😀 😀 So I always bring my own snacks 😀

    1. Girlswanderlust

Hmmm yeah, I have to agree with you that the airplane food is not always the best… Guess it will be better when flying business- or first class though..

Some of these are super useful and some are hilarious. Practice your death glare? hahahaha I practice mine on the flights where kids are being annoying and the parents do nothing. Once that kid sees my face – they won’t do ANYTHING annoying near me anymore. I got that look on lock. lol.
